I’d like to revise my statement on the comparison between this song and Opportunity Cost. I recently found the lyrics to the Aman Amun song and realized that, while both songs share the idea that relationships may hinder a person’s ability to achieve his goals, Opportunity Cost presents a loving view of the woman he must leave, and DJ Dormio certainly does not. In fact, the woman mentioned in DJ Dormio seems to merely exist as an obstacle and a representation of society’s ideals on the Somnambulist CD. I love analyzing and over analyzing these songs. :D |

| I really like the music in the beginning of this song, and I love the Edgar Allen Poe reference at the end! | |

I absolutely adore the lyrics in this song! The description of the men at the “corporate gallows with ties around [their] necks” is incredibly vivid (and badass) imagery. Every time I listen to this song, I see the businessmen in my mind hanging from their blood red ties at some sort of gallows while wearing dark business suits. It’s a beautiful, haunting, and disturbing image all at the same time. I also really love the line “An American tragedy. You're searching for a remedy sitting in traffic on a freeway to insanity.” This was my response when my mom told me that one day I would have to give up my ambition to become an author and go get a “real job” in a math-related field. She didn’t really appreciate it, but I feel like many adults are truly just stuck in a rut of “practicality,” having given up their own dreams for the life their parents and friends expected them to lead. |

Just like everyone else I’ve talked to, I misheard the line “she’s your anchor, my boy” as “she’s a regular whore” the first time I heard it. While both lines actually seem to fit with the song amusingly enough, I truly enjoy how the metaphor of the anchor in the real lyrics connects this song with the rest of the songs on the album, particularly Voice of Reason. Whether intentional or not, I also found it really interesting that this song seems to convey a very similar message to the one conveyed in the song Opportunity Cost by Aman Amun, the musical project of CA band member Brian. I must say that I love the line “How can you call yourself in love when deep down you feel incomplete” as well. The way it’s sung makes it stand out from the rest of the lyrics, and it seems to sum up the basic point of the song. This girl is preventing the main character from achieving his goals… if she was truly right for him instead of being “society’s pearl”, she would have supported him rather than encouraged him to get a financially secure but soul-draining job. |

| Alright then, I shall pop the cherry on the Crumbling Arches lyrics discussion. I only recently started listening to this song, but once I finally listened to it all of the way through and read the lyrics, it became one of my favorite CA songs. I love the use of the phrase “Corporate corpse” to describe the man who has conformed to society’s standards and expectations. Essentially, although he appears successful, he is dead inside. Listening to this song always inspires me to put away my math homework and continue working on writing my novels again. The child in the song helps me remember and focus on my own goals, just like he helps the Corporate corpse remember his childhood ambition to sail the seas. | |
