Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 Lyrics 17 years ago
Yes I agree that the family has lost their father figure, but I always took it as lost to alcaholism not death. In the first verse he is telling his dad what he needs, as if there is something that could bring him back to the way he used to be, in this case a new born child. Probably because his younger brother once was a new born child and things were different. The younger brother is the one that has died in my opinion. This is most notable in the "brother see.." verse. The dad had probably turned to alcahol in dealing with the tragic death of the brother, hence what he needs is a child. I think (under the assumtion that the song is about true events)that Jeff Mangum never connected with his father very well. The younger brother was the one that the dad loved more because he was so much like him "How he'd love to find his tounge in your teeth" He his speaking to his dad about his brother and it means his brother loved to talk like his dad (act like, immitate). The Dad probably had some sort post tramatic stress syndrom. maybe a Vietnam vet? He kept in boxes so tight sounding only at night while he sleeps. Very complex song with many characters, in the end I think Jeff deeply wants to connect and console with the remaining members of his torn apart family but doesn't know how

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I always thought that the cut your hair line was in reference to Sampson (in the Bible) since this song is infused with religious metaphors, it would make sense. Sampson had incredible masculine strength but all his powers were in his hair and when it got cut he lost his strength and was humbled by God. Love humbles masculinity

actually, well trained vocalists like Buckley do in fact sing in falsetto, as well as their regular voice. The reason you don't hear the difference is because they have trained themselves to have seamless transitions. Where as Thom Yorke for instance exploits the different sound of falsetto and uses it to his advantage. Just a different style of singing both use falsetto.

Tool – Stinkfist Lyrics 17 years ago
I grew up in an extremely strict christian family. I first became aware of music outside of church hymns through a tiny little radio tape deck I had. I used to record the radio and make mix tapes of my favorite songs and listen to them in my bed late at night. When I first heard Stinkfist, It hurt me to listen to the lyrics. I was young and wasn't capable to comprehend metaphores in music yet and took it for the literal meaning only. Yet the passion in the voice and the visual sounds of tool drew me in. This was the first step in my breaking free and becoming who I am today. I didn't want it, yet I needed it, to know I'm alive. Now reading the lyrics, I interpret it as a love song, a bitter reality of love. I have felt both sides of the duality presented in this song. Love is not easy because it's easier to ignore the subtleties and turn to other means of satisfaction. Sex can be subtle but it can also be primal and physical. In this case The fist entering deeper and deeper is satisfying a "fix" but in doing so makes it harder and harder to get back to what started it all. "And love is not a victory march, it's a cold and broken Hallelujah" -The late Jeff Buckley. I see a lot of different interpretations posted here and I believe if Tool were reading them they would be proud. Tool's lyrics are intended to mean something different to everyone. If I was battling drug addiction, I could easily apply this song to my condition and that is beautiful. With that said, I encourage all posters here to shy away from starting their blog with "No, this is obviously..." or "this is why your wrong". For those bulletins are the only ones that truly miss the point of these lyrics.
