Girlyman – Fall Stories Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree, it's absolutely about getting to know someone new, but I think it's more about the transition from a just dating someone to establishing a relationship. "September's still summer but the nights are like fall" is a reference to spending the whole night talking with someone and getting to know them better. The changing of the seasons also alludes to the growth of the relationship from the heat and casual fun of summer to the comfort and relaxation of fall.

Your Heart Breaks – Southern Girl Lyrics 15 years ago
The meaning of this sweet love song if pretty clear, I'd say. Great job on the lyrics, but I have one minor correction: "And has wanderlust like country vines" should be "And has wanderlust like KUDZU vines." Kudzu is a vine that just covers everything in many parts of the south.

Lily Allen – Never Gonna Happen Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this, cause I think it's a confession. The line "How could I be more obvious?" seems to make sense in the first chorus. You're think, "Yeah, dude, she's made it clear." And then the next verse shows her explicit using of the subject of the song, followed with the repetition of the line "How could I be more obvious?" and there's the twist. It's said tongue-in-cheek. The singer knows what she's doing is awful.

Especially because it's place just after "Back to the Start" on the album, I think both songs work as a recognition of the ways that the singer can and has hurt people in the past. It's these two songs that make me really adore the album. It's not just a bunch of twee pop songs about love with a couple "Fuck the establishment" songs to show her relevance...there's a lot of real self-reflection.

Sufjan Stevens – All the King's Horns Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of my favorites. A beautiful song and a reminder that Christmas is the beginning of a journey that takes us to Jesus' death and ends in Jesus' resurrection.

Sufjan Stevens – All the Trees of the Field Will Clap Their Hands Lyrics 17 years ago
I interpret this as a tying of the passage from Isaiah to the story of Jesus' entrance in Jerusalem. There's the obvious parallel in the language of the passages ("Before you mountains and hills will break into cries of joy," / "if these were quiet, the stones themselves would cry out").

The line "If I am alive this time next year" makes sense to me in this context of the Palm Sunday story: Christ is entering Jerusalem where he understands he will be killed.
"I'm preparing every part for you" is a reflection of the total sacrifice of this impeding death will require and Jesus' preparation for doing the will of God.
The parade of trees is the streets lined with people waving tree branches as Jesus enters the city.
"And I am throwing all my thoughts away / And I'm destroying every bet I've made / And I am joining all my thoughts to you" In this I hear Jesus really giving up his own will to the will of God.

Lastly, while I am a Christian, I understand this as being a song about Christianity. I believe that was probably Sufjan Steven's intent. That being said, there's no reason other, secular, interpretations are less valid. Just like I'm sure many Christians would disagree with my interpretation of this song being connected to the Palm Sunday story and say it's just about an individual's relationship with God. I think many interpretations can be present for many people. Just my 2 cents.
