I think there may be two separate themes in the song: unfair trial/prosecution and eternalness. The 1st verse mentions Pontious or more specifically Pontius Pilate, the judge of the trial of Jesus Christ and the one who ordered his crucifixion. I'm not sure exactly what this verse is about but the line: "How can we take the test Without the questions" suggests that not enough questions have been asked about a prosecution. Throughout the song, verses and lines suggest an unfair trial due to overlooked evidence. I wonder if the theme of trial and judgment is referring to the ability of Religious people to overlook the evidence against Religion. Not sure what the 2nd verse is about "Some how the greatest Point comes without reason". I think the 3rd verse (There is no master plan) is about the writer having to come to grips with the realization may be nothing after we die. I think there is a lot to this verse: - "There is no master plan" this refers to God's master plan mentioned in the bible. - "Too many promises/Not enough evidence of my soul" the Christian promises of an afterlife conflict with Christianity being unable to provide evidence of a supernatural existence. - "Now I can't understand, What keeps me going" this is a common atheist dilemma. Many people have a desire to work towards some greater good or at least want to know that they still exist in some way when they die. Without the existence of an afterlife, there is nothing important to work towards nor even any logical point to life at all. |
