I think drawing from a poem was intended to impart meaning to the song. He seems to acknowledge the theft, saying "Everything you say, you stole," "Write these words back down," and "And history is all the same." Michael Palmer wrote the song in response to the Vietnam War; the song is saying that we're committing the same crimes now as we were then, and the same words apply, so "write these words back down." |
