I think the song is reaching out to someone who was hurt in a past relationship, locked his or her heart away, and refuses to try and love or be loved again, but what's the use in going it alone? (a lone wolf).
Whatever damage that was done can be healed and the person can love again, and allow themselves to open up and be loved, given time and patience to allow yourself to heal. |

I know that this is a response to a very old post, but I felt inclined to reply anyways hoping you would still see this, since I am always intrigued by sounds that remain a bit vague. What you're hearing on the absolute very beginning is the dulcimer in combination with tubular bells. |

This song is about trying to force a relationship that seemed really good starting out, but simply isn't working, and being in denial of that. Feeling used because he slept with her and loves her, but the feelings are not reciprocated. It's part narrative of things they were doing to spend time together, and part expression of an internal conflict on the part of the singer. The relationship that isn't working was probably a summer fling. |

It could very well be about suicide cults, such as the Heaven's Gate cult. People are taken advantage of because of the empty life they are living at the time, and get sucked into the cult, only to eventually commit suicide. It makes sense to me when you read the lyrics, but this is only one of many possibilities. |

All of you are wrong. Roberta Flack never even wrote this song. She saw it in a magazine while flying on a plane and looked into it further because the name caught her attention.
It was written by a girl named Lori Lieberman, who wrote it about Don McLean's song "Empty Chairs". |
