| Obviously disco stick is a reference to Edward Cullen's penis. Disco balls sparkle and so do vampires therefore a disco stick would be a sparkly penis. And we all know who has one of those. | |
| Regina Spektor – Chemo Limo Lyrics | 17 years ago |

To me it's pretty obvious that she doesn't have money for chemo just like she doesn't have money for a limo. But if she did she'd rather make the most of the rest of her life and choose the limo. "I couldn't afford chemo like I couldn't afford a limo" The line is only changed in the song once but I think it proves that point. I think this song is a time where she drifts in and out of consciousness and what's happening around her mixes with her dreams. Crispy Ben Franklin is money and symbolizes her lack of it. The doctor and her boss talking about insurance policies is discussing the fact that she can't afford treatment. They tell her she'll be OK so they don't have to worry her. I think she realizes that they're lying and she won't be OK but is willing to stay in denial so that she doesn't have to think about the fact that she's dying and will have to leave her children behind. "My kids were being quiet I knew it was a dream right away" Her kids are quiet so it has to be a dream, she goes back to sleep. But I think that part is real and her kids are upset about her having cancer and are behaving because they're sad. She just doesn't want to believe it and goes back to her dream/fantasy about riding in a limo. At the same time she's a fighter and wants to live the rest of her life. She wants to watch her children grow up and she wants to retire and go out in style. She hates the disease, it makes her tired, and she just wants to be OK again. She thinks about her children and their personalities and how much she loves them. I think the last verse is her coming out of denial and realizing that she's dying. She just sounds extra upset about Barbara and adds in the "Oh my God". This song is so heart-breaking. Especially as a nursing student since I know that I'll have to deal with these sorts of situations in the future. |

| Regina Spektor – Pavlov's Daughter Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I kind of feel like this song is really 3 songs put together with different connections and meanings. They can tie in with each other but I don't think they have too. The grave diggers through Babylon is one. Lucille is another. And Pavlov's daughter is the third. I take the grave diggers part to kind of be a commentary on how medicine and technology have advanced so much that not as many people are dying. Pickings are "getting slim". The ambulance part to me is about how paramedics just ride around and wait all day for a call. But they don't get one in the song and the day is sort of wasted. If people didn't get hurt or have diseases than they would be out of a job. They and the grave diggers wouldn't make a living if people didn't die. It's ironic like tearing up paper to have a parade in a rain forest. The part about songs about angels is commentary on cliches. Life isn't full of happiness and we don't have guardian angels conveniently dropping their feathers so we know that they're there. I like the idea that Babylon is referring to the district in NY and the narrator is going their to buy whiskey. I also think it could tie into the angel (and then Biblical) theme and be talking about the Babylon in the Bible. Although all I can remember about that is that there was a whore of Babylon. Lucille makes me think of a stalker who's apartment is directly below the guy she is stalking. Although I also like the idea of her being Lucifer and "downstairs" being hell. The ceiling is so thin that she can hear ever everything she does and spends her days listening to him and obsessing over him. She's starts to believe that she can hear his thoughts "I know what you feel"/ I hear you turning your thoughts off I turn mine off too The only thing I hear is you and you don't sound nice and you don't sound right and you don't sound good and you don't sound right" Or it could also be Lucifer keeping tabs on everything you do, mundane and "sinful". The Pavlov's daughter part makes me think of someone committing suicide. She's been conditioned to think a certain way by society and one day just gives up and stays in bed. The sun rises but she doesn't give up and drools on her pillow (because she's loosing motor control from drugs she took to kill herself?). "And it was far away and hazy like a dream not a dream, not a dream, but the ocean, not the ocean, but forever..." She's drifting in and out of dreams as she dies. But it's not a dream, or the ocean, or anything else but forever because she's killed herself and death lasts forever. |

| Regina Spektor – Buildings Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The first verse/ asking for time: The general gist I get from this song is that it's a husband that really loves his wife. She, however, is really depressed and drinks and parties to try and forget/escape. Even though he loves her she can tell that her drinking and depression are putting a strain on their relationship and she's afraid that he'll leave her. Hence her asking for time. But time can't be given, you can't hold onto to it. The calling time a gift makes me think of her saying something like: "if you loved me you would do this. I love you, please just give me one more chance. I'll change and get better" "He'd take one look at her a say "Oh, oh it's okay" And her conscience would issue yet another last warning, saying": I think he always intends to bring it up but he sees how miserable she is the next morning and how much she regrets it and can't bring himself to upset her even more. But she knows that he's getting tired of the routine and wants to stop even though she doesn't know how. If anything the fact that he doesn't push her to get help allows her to keep putting it off and continuing the cycle. Last verse: She spends the day thinking about everything and "rots at the core". Her cleaning is like her trying to erase her problems and their problems in their relationship. It's as if nothing had ever happened because they never talk about it. I take the buildings line to be him re-assuring her that if they can build buildings so tall then anything can happen. In the end, the years slip by and nothing is solved. He is afraid for her and she's constantly afraid that this time he'll give up and leave her. But nothing is ever resolved because neither of them will bring it up. |
