I'm convinced your second line of thought is a good direction to start with here. The lyrics are obviously implying something far more than just 'live a good life rather than a bad one, or else'. I would imagine the lyrics are directed toward someone specific. The line "I should have made up your mind for you" gives that away. However, I believe the whole song could be directed to our society in general, as the great majority of people choose to live this very same lifesyle. This song is a commentary on the Gospel vs. the society My thoughts: Paradise = Justification, but not by yourself or thru your own actions, and eternal life with God. Demise = Eternal damnation, something that happens after the life of the "flesh". "Fail to mention...ignore the signs", and "smile and...over our eyes" are referring to the sinner convincing themselves thru their own lies that they are 'ok' or in the clear to be justified as heaven bound. The lyrics are directed toward someone who is living a lie, but not only that, they also believe their own lie. The lyrics also ask the recepient to glance at the heart and motive, rather than do whatever their lustful desire impulses and later claiming innocence thru lies. Seriously, this is a Gospel message with lots of holes in it. That's what it is. Many of their songs follow similar messages. They all seem to be directed toward an audience that is blind to the truth about life in general, regarding spiritual justification. |
