I absolutely love this song - in fact, it's the song I walked down the isle to at my wedding. Gorgeous...did I mention I love this song? |

This is one of my favorite James Taylor songs...it's like both a funeral lament and a love song to the earth at the same time. It expresses this deep reverence to the earth, and this connection with it...I love the line "helpless and speechless and breathless"...it's like he sees the world, and experiences the rush of beauty of it, and while he loves it, he is in agony as we have to slowly watch it die...I don't know, I'm not explaining this well, but I just find this song incredibly beautiful. |

| The Decemberists – Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect Lyrics

I like a lot of the interpretations on here, but when I heard this song, I didn't think of it as literally as most people apparently did. I think of it as being the story of a man who probably doesn't have a whole lot going on in his waking or real life, and he dreams of elaborate lives for himself. "Here I dreamt I was a soldier"--it's like he's imagining these adventures for himself. He also dreams of loves--the woman who he wants to be with ("just to lay with you / there's nothing that I wouldn't do / save lay my rifle down") The chorus is reality--try one dream, imagine another life or two, but it always comes down to reality, and he guesses that this is okay, and he's probably better off than he is in his dreams, but the wishy-washy of the wording in the chorus ("I guess") makes me think he doesn't really believe this. Verse two follow this theme, with him dreaming of a tragic love affair for himself, as does verse three where he dreams of an exotic life for himself--he will be buried with his marionettes, he has had a lot of women, etc. I don't know, I just thought of it as a man who likely has a life that isn't that eventful or exciting, dreaming of who else he could be, and of different lives for himself, none of which are real. Anyway, that's just what I thought, which is why I always found the details of this song to be so beautiful, and what made the song seem somewhat tragic but relatable. |

| The Decemberists – The Rake's Song Lyrics

I think it's interesting that he claims he is "no more a rake" once he gets married, since a rake can mean a loose, disorderly, vicious man, or a person addicted to lewdness and other scandalous vices...and after he announces this, he goes on a killing spree. Just the first thing that struck me about the song. Really dark, but I tap my toe in spite of myself |
