I think this song is talking about how the narrator hurt the woman he loved and who loved him deeply, and didn't realize that he needed her until it was too late. I don't know. I just get the feeling that perhaps she loved him so much and he took it all for granted and ended up breaking her in the end. I took the mentioning of a 'station' to mean that the woman was leaving the narrator, perhaps from a bus station or a train station, and the narrator is begging for her to forgive him and to take him back, all via telephone. From the line "There's no way to grow that don't hurt", I gathered that the woman was telling the narrator that she knew she would be hurting without him, but she knew she would also be hurting with him because of what he had done to her, so she was better off. The middle cluster of lines is obviously what the narrator feels towards the woman. Perhaps he never had the courage to tell her, or perhaps he never realized how much she meant to him until he hurt her. Maybe he left her for what he thought would be a better life, or maybe he cheated. But the narrator did something that made him realize that this woman meant more than anything to him, and now he is trying to tell her he needs her after he seems to have discarded her. Whatever he did to hurt her caused him to epiphany and realize that, yes, she is the woman he is supposed to be with. The last set of lines is the woman responding to the narrator's pleading for forgiveness and maybe even his declaration that he really does love her, telling him that she would rather be alone than be with him again. She's saying that she can't forgive him because she can't even trust him, and that not every sin is given forgiveness, especially such a terrible one like his. It sounds like the woman is full of bitterness and hurt, like the narrator really broke her. I do think she was completely in love with him; the pain in just the few lines of her 'speaking' is evidence. I think this song is something a lot of people can relate to on many different levels. I may be way off on my interpretation, but it's just what I gathered. Even in his simpler songs, Sam Beam is still a genius. |

Lovely. It's such a nice song, being in a long distance relationship. It's very bittersweet, and puts into such beautiful words the emotions one feels being away from someone you care about so deeply. It's selfish of me to apply the song to my life and act like it was written about me, for me, but...my 2 year relationship with my lovely recently was put on hold, as we fought more and more the less we got to see each other. We're on a "break", immature and horrible as that sounds, so we can find ourselves and each other again. This song is like my theme song for life right now. I thought things would be better once I took a break and gave myself space and time to think about my relationship. Now, I just feel so hollow without him. No matter how terrible the distance and fighting was before, this--truly being without him--is the most emptying experience yet. I guess I'd like to think I can identify with this song. It seems like Dallas was going through a similar situation whenever he wrote it; his words are so true to what I am going through right now. |

This reminds me of that Greek play....I forgot what it's called. So obviously this comment loses credibility. Anyways. The women in it decide that in order to maintain power/control over their warrior husbands, they need to boycott sex. Then, obviously, their soulja boys will do whatever they want, whenever they want. And, in turn, they get laid. I think what the wives wanted was for the men to stop fighting so much....I can't really remember. But yes! Give it a modern day twist, and you have Pile of Gold. Be nice and you get a treat. Be an asshole, you ain't gettin' nooooone. |

Your grandmother!!! That's insane....! I'm glad you're being strong. For you, and the other girl. Shoot. If it was me...I would have told her, oh, by the way? Your boyfriend is a jerk. I hope if I'm ever the girl in the situation who's boyfriend is talking to someone else on the phone at wee hours in the morning....I hope the other girl tells me. I would appreciate it. So much. Love the song though. It makes me sad. But it makes me so happy. She really has a talent for matching catchy tunes with sombering lyrics. |

I definitely thought it was a song about animals, too. At least, that's what I thought at first. Then it kind of turned to a song about love, and how you get crapped on (or out). I don't know. Maybe it's one of those songs with duel meanings. It gave me a good laugh,though. Hearing "the shits" in a song that sounds so cute...it's pretty funny. |
