^^I'd agree with that. I'm not sure about the "repressed" part that you said, because I'm not sure that it would really make sense to even use the word repressed (I figured it was the guy talking about himself, but I can't explain that either.) Also, "sit and swoon" is saying that the girl is going to be persuaded by this guy's supposed logic, and see his point of view. "(selective) first amendments" is criticizing the guy for defending pornography through the first amendment, but complaining about a feminazi's opinion, or desire to opine. In a way, selective would apply to both of them. Yes, this is the view of Propagandhi. |

One of the keys to this song has to lie in him saying, "can you live with what you know about yourself, when we're all alone behind closed doors?" I think it's pretty safe to say that the wife or girlfriend was cheating. I feel that this song is about a ruined relationship, a serious relationship, and dealing with it. The guy has let "business" (being music) become the most important thing, and realizes now that he his paying for it. Nobody who takes pride in their writing would use "looking over my shoulder" as lying on top of the girl having sex. It's about her being behind him in everything. He goes home and she just has to watch over his shoulder as he goes about his work. At first he takes the blame. The things that have happened, and the things she has done are side effects of his mistakes - up until "really, it's me not you." He tries to understand and tries to take the blame. But he's also pissed, and despite trying to take the high road, it comes out. How could she do it to him, and how can she even live with what she's done? It's right in front of them and needs to be adressed but neither have ever, or really want to say anything about how their relationships is falling apart. With, "it's got me on my knees...", he wants to do the right thing, and doesn't know what it is. Not having believed it when he was 15 is about how he could have never thought music would be the cause of the biggest trial in his life. That's how I understand it, but when I think of "looking over my shoulder" I think of that being the universal pet peeve. |
