I always thought of this song as a comment on sex. I always pictured this song as a boy at some party hooking up with some girl he likes. Except, he legitimately cares about her and she's just very lust-driven. Or, I thought maybe the girl just thinks sex is what he wants. "so much more than he could ever give A life free of lies and a meaningful relationship." I hear that as saying that sex sort of royally fucks up relationships, that relationships based solely on sex are very transparent and impure. "It used to be the reason I breathed but now it's choking me up." This clearly, at least to me, is the songwriters own confession. Everyone cares about sex so much, especially teenagers, and now he sees all of its faults and what it can do to destroy a relationship. |
