Bob Dylan – Winterlude Lyrics 16 years ago
agreed, this is definitely one of his most elegant and tranquil melodies. i wonder how much, if any, of the inspiration here comes from the annual Winterlude festival in Ottawa

The Beach Boys – California Girls Lyrics 16 years ago
while Brian was getting ready to do Pet Sounds, Mike Love especially wanted to keep the boys with the status quo. this song is probably the best example of the two meeting in the middle

The Beach Boys – Amusement Parks, U.S.A. Lyrics 16 years ago
my disappointment with this song is the complete opposite. while Summer Days and Summer Nights is a great album overall, Brian was forced to include tracks like this one in order to appease those (Mike Love, Capitol Records) who wanted the band to maintain its surf/cars/girls songwriting formula.
when you look at the Beach Boys Today, this album, and Pet Sounds, its clear that Brian was forced to compromise a little before he could create a masterpiece

The Beach Boys – Surfer Girl Lyrics 16 years ago
i think the reason this song resonates so easily with non-surfers is because its theme (or my interpretation of it) can be applied anywhere.
the singer, in this case a surfer, has been noticing someone for quite some time now. his feelings don't entirely make sense even to him, but he just can't help but pursue them. this could happen to any of us, the sudden and almost irrational crushes we develop at school, work, or the beach :)

The Beach Boys – Mona Lyrics 16 years ago
i think this track has aged very well. while social interaction is becoming more abstract and distant (texting/facebook) the singer wants everything to be simpler. he is pleading, emphasized by the repetitive but forceful structure of the song, to a woman he's become infatuated with. all he wants to do is take her to a dinner, or a movie, or even just to share some of each others' favourite records. how well she is receiving the message is not totally clear.
dennis was a very gifted singer. you can hear his hope and frustration in equal parts. check out his solo album Pacific Ocean Blue. this is quite a bit poppier than anything on there, but it has all kinds of the same passionate soul

The Beach Boys – Love Is A Woman Lyrics 16 years ago
i very much disagree with these comments. the lyrics are nothing profound, but they're sung with such conviction that it gets a powerful reaction from me everytime.
as for the album, it was the last collection of BBs tracks that Brian would exert very much control over. in fact, it was the first since Wild Honey (a full ten years before Love You) that featured him very much at all, as singer and principal songwriter. it's not for everyone i'll grant you, but this album has a charming sense of fun and tranquility that i appreciate as a lost gem. even in his strangest days Brian created some awesome music

Sam Roberts – Detroit '67 Lyrics 17 years ago
An ode to Detroit's heyday, when the Big 3 motor companies were pushing jobs and profits, instead of losing them. A working class Detroitian today probably cannot help but wish that they may have lived in a more prosperous time, like 1967. They have a few buddies to drink with as they ponder this (and it certainly is a drinking song, which the video makes clear), among them: the Chippewa who were pushed off of their land by the French, who in turn were conquered by the British. Is this just an unlucky patch of land? Sam can't say for sure what the future holds for this great city, but who can?

Sam Roberts – A Stone Would Cry Out Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is heartbreaking in every sense. A young man who never had to fight for his love, and the first time he is compelled to do so he must concede that some doors are better left closed. The sorrow has hardened him; he is unable to move on as the rolling wave of her memory keeps him down.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel however, if we treat Sam's body of work as a whole. By listening to the albums in order the next song we hear tells us that that there's still love at the end of the world :)

Sam Roberts – Hard Road Lyrics 17 years ago
Reviews of Sam's newest album (Love at the End of the World) accuse him of being too bleak. While I don't wholly disagree with this assessment, it is totally without merit for them to say that he has grown cynical. I saw him perform a couple of weeks ago, and I would say that his strongest connection with the crowd came when he performed Hard Road. He made all of us believe these words, and there was no doubting that he still believed them too.

Sam Roberts – Paranoia Lyrics 17 years ago
I was hoping to hear this one too, but the boys have too many concert-worthy songs that they can't all be performed in one night. For only having three full length albums out, that's pretty impressive!
She has a knack for giving bad advice, but it's her advice that will ease his paranoia. Sometimes we need someone else to push us out of that comfort zone, and only then can we really flourish.

Sam Roberts – The Gate Lyrics 17 years ago
One of the characteristics throughout history that has made Western civilisation unique is its core belief in individualism. Chemical City sees this principle being taken too far. Our modern streets see more and more people drowning out the world with their headphones, and others are buzzing around with nothing on their minds besides their career. We are continually becoming disconnected from nature and our fellow man. However we manage to deal with this, be it spiritually or through the power of love, Sam is urging us to hold on to our values and run from the unnatural heartlessness that we have inherited from our history.
