Franz Ferdinand – Ulysses Lyrics 15 years ago
The Tennyson idea is a nice thought that I'd not thought of EarlySunsets, and it really does make sense. I see references to Homer's Odyssey and the Land of the Lotus Eaters (c'mon let's get high! / you're never goin' home). Unlike Ulysses, he's never going home at the end of his wanderings, but will be caught up either because he's stuck in the Land of the Lotus-Eaters with his men/band gettin' high on lotus and/or because metaphorically he can't return home for other reasons. I also see references to James Joyce's Ulysses spilling over to Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man in this, especially the video for it with the religious visionary/stream of consciousness feeling and of course Stephen Daedalus "never going home." There are some literary layers. Definitely primarily about getting high though.

Cake – Meanwhile, Rick James... Lyrics 15 years ago
I've always heard the lyrics as "meanwhile Rick James takes anew." I don't think it's "takes her nude."

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Phenomena Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with all who say this song is hot! & very much about sex. The hiding could refer to hiding drugs, yes, or simply to hiding arousal and the signs thereof. Or possibly to both. As to the Latinate plural problem, I agree that this is probably intentional, but this bothers my overbrain a little each time I hear it. Song ain't about the frontal cortex though.

I think the "don't fall asleep with the Mormon" idea is hilarious, and awesome. For my part for the longest time I've thought it was "don't fall asleep with the mermaid/she'll make you sweat in the water." But I dunno if that's right

Cake – Jolene Lyrics 17 years ago
I think that people are finally starting to get to the heart of this song in the last few comments. It's not really a song about wanting to get laid, people. He wants to "pull her down into bed" yes - he wants her that way - but in this song the sexual aspect is figured AS him saving her from her dark secrets and pain. I think the sickly smell of the creme rinse and tobacco smoke - a poignant detail - is supposed to be indicative of either incest (abuse by her father - the next verse is about her hearing him snore) or of her sleeping around with somebody.

The song is about his love and desire for her, but it is even more about saving her from her background (lower class I'd wager, and possibly abused). He wants to be her escape, and wishes for superhuman powers to do so.
