I think that on the surface it sounds like an angel who lost its wings. I have a more personal interpretation because I lost a person who was very close to me and this song makes me think of that loss. It was like having to learn how to live all over again because I had depended on this person so much, I didn't know what to do or how to live after they were suddenly gone. But you eventually have to get yourself together and learn to deal with it. |

I had heard about saline abortions which are used for late term abortions and the idea was disturbing to me so stayed in my mind for many years. When I heard Saline the Salt Lake Queen, I it immediately came to my mind, and after reading the lyrics I think it kind of fits. The mention of a "chalice" sometimes is symbolic of a womb and crows are associated with death. Also, "swollen up with pride" makes me think of being in a late term pregnancy. I was curious and did a little more research and found that a famous case of a saline aborted fetus ended up living. Her name is Gianna Jessen and her mother was 17 when she had the abortion. Hmmm... |

Wow, its amazing that everyone has a different interpretation of this song!
It has a special meaning to me. I'm an atheist now, but I remember when I was younger, I was talking to my dad and I asked what if Jesus came back as a woman rather than a man, would anyone believe her? My dad said that Jesus would never come back as a woman because that would just be a cruel trick on everyone... But I just kept thinking, "What if?" Haha, so when I listen to this song, I imagine Jesus as a woman singing it to someone who doesn't believe...
It really just reminds me that I should never underestimate or judge someone, even if I think I know them really well. |

I'm not really sure what the meaning of the song is supposed to be, other than what is obvious. I just love the image this song creates in my mind, and the feeling I get when I hear it. It has a personal meaning for me. This is my favorite Donovan song ever. "Seagull flies across my eyes forever" - means to me that I'm always going to live near the ocean :) |

I just love how this song can be interpreted however you like. I think the first idea that comes to mind is a prostitute, but it definitely could be a young partier who just wants to be around whatever is going on. Either way, she's just sad and you can't help but sympathize. |

I just think that if her hair gets caught in the ferris wheel, a seagull will come and build a nice nest out of it. It just means to me that everything is connected, or happens for a reason... About the silver bicycle, I think that's a drug reference but I don't know for sure. I love the image that this song creates in my mind. I can totally imagine a carnival right off the beach and the sun is setting and the sky is an orangey tangerine color. This song makes me feel so mellow :) |
