I'm not too up on Bad Religion's catalogue, but that might be a place to look. my other thought is a possible case of Mise-en-abîme, but that's only speculative; I'd need to know if the lyricist studied literature or art in order to verify that. |

The first time I heard this song the lines that struck me where these: "You wanted good schools and friends with pools You’re not a contra" I immediately think of a person who once had those revolutionary/countercultural ideals and thoughts in their youth. After some time this person looks at his/her life and sees that they've been pursuing a luxuriant and comfortable lifestyle, and that they're not who they thought they were. Put in context with the rest of the lyrics, I think that the girl made it seem like she shared the guy's rebellious/forward thinking leanings. But after time, once the girl's gone, the guy looks back and sees that he'd been fooled, and what's worse, it doesn't matter anymore because he still loves her regardless. |

If you read the lyrics as they are, without the title or intro, you can very easily see the powerful vs powerless, boss vs employe interpretation. It's really not that far of a stretch to go from people treating animals poorly to people treating people poorly; its all about a false sense of superiority and the results of such sentiments. Also. Relax and don't be so fucking mean. Haha you really flipped out over that. |

You'll never know what clean feels like until you've gotten your hands dirty. This song makes me feel a little better when I know I'm fucking up. I might be a mess right now, but I've seen life at its most bare and honest, pretty or not. I don't want to make it sound like Against Me is advocating this, but that's how I take it. |
