I agree w/ scottparrott. It seems to be a breakup song. "it came rolling down the cheek" implies sadness(tears). The guy essentially built himself up to be better than he was "it's never as it seems. The lines what comes after this momentary bliss, consequence means that she recognizes that the relationship, though it seemed great in the beginning isn't real and now she must suffer the consequense. The lines "materialize or let the ashes fly" I think is a plea, telling him to become the person, the myth he set himself up to be at the start of the relationship or put an end to the relationship (ashes indicates the relationship is destroyed and over). Really a brilliant song with powerful imagery and great lyrics |

My initial thought upon hearing this, and I'm surprised I haven't seen it written here, is that it is told from the point of view of a dead person. The person is in a coffin in the backseat of a hurst heading towards a Funeral (get it?) Therefore, they "like the peace" because they are at rest. Idk maybe its just me.. |

In trying to determine the meaning of this song, Ive noticed it has pretty descriptive imagery. There are several references to a desert-like surrounding, "wilderness for miles, Oasis, white sand" everytime I hear it I imagine a zebra running in slow motion across a desert. In terms of the meaning I think it is about someone who is different being told not to worry and embrace their uniqueness. The person singing will accept them no matter what. Beach Houses "anyway you run you run before us" is to me their way of saying the similar nirvana phrase "come as you are" |

This song really is brilliant because he is really saying subsequently that we have no affect on our future or our past. We have no affect on our future because it hasn't happened yet. Even if the man trys to alter what his future self has told him he must have thte same fate. We have no affect on our past because even though the future version is giving a warning, he basically implies that it can't help, or change anything, "We're not gonna make it, you and me were never meant to be part of the future." All you (the listner) has is this moment right now to live in and you should take advantage of that. |

Great analysis. I agree with your choice to disregard the political aspects of the song in so far as the album as a whole focuses on the very apparent ideas of self-realization and a questioning of who we are and why we are here as individuals. It is an album of a person trying to find his way and purpose in the world and the meaning of life and your explanation of this song ties into that theme perfectly. |

Surprising to hear someone who doesn't like the early post punk stuff. That's what I miss most from this band. The music drew you in and the lyrics made you stay. Truthfully though some of my favorite songs from them were not post-punk sounding, (Only Ones who know, Riot Van). Their last album was a little too commercial and monotone in terms of song style imo but If they made songs that sounded more like this and others from this album I'd be on board |

I said it was directed at the fans like myself, who were disappointed that fwn wasn't exactly like wpsiatwin and who were disappointed that humbug wasn't exactly like fwn and there are a lot of them out there. I don't think that's so ridiculous to believe. I saw it as alex trying to explain to people who were not willing to accept musical change why change is sometimes good, as much as I love there albums, admittedly, fwn and humbug took some growing for me. He's basically saying they are going to keep changing their style as they progress throughout their carreer, so no albums are going to sound the same. I might sound like a hater but I really don't get the popularity of this song at all. Don't get me wrong, I don't think its a bad song, but it certainly isn't a great song, and CERTAINLY doesn't hold a candle to a lot of other white stripes songs. I have every album from this wonderful band and the fact that this is one of the songs they're best known for baffles me. To me everything on GBMS is better than this. So if someone could explain the "greatness" of this song without simply describing it as "epic" or "really fun to listen to" it would be greatly appreciated. |

Its about a person attempting and failing to explain why people are evil "It is from the embryonic" suggests that it may be that all people are inherently evil. I also like how the simplicity of the beat parallels the seeming simplicity of the song but like the lyrics and their meaning, it grows and becomes something greater and more intricate. |

Wow, I am the biggest nirvana and velvet underground fan and what makes this version good is that it is done in the classic nirvana style and not ust a lame attempt to imitate the original, which would have been impossible. To say one version is better than the other to me is crazy because there done in different styles. Though I still prefer the original (probably because I heard it before this version) I can still appreciate nirvana for doing an amazing cover |

The song has a lot of carnival references: trampolines, balancing acts, bicycle wheels, It seems to me that Alex is trying to capture the raw excitement of a carnival atmosphere in a song which climaxes with the pretty visitors waving their arms casting shadows which is basically the crowds at the show... imo |

I never know how to analyze that last line, "My name is geraldine, I'm your social worker" Its almost anti-climactic, because I don't know if it's meant that this is her job and therefore she is not serious or that these feelings previously expressed are truely authentic. If it is true that the song is about how romance isn't dead in the world, perhaps the line isn't supposed to be taken literally as she is actually a social worker, but instead she is like a social worker in that she is there to look out for the person and help them. |

This was my favorite song on this album and for a while I didn't know why but after getting humbug, I realized that the songs on FWN all follow a very similar sound.. except this one. Humbug works because all the songs on it sound completely different from the one before it forcing you to pay attention to the songs instead of zoning out and combining the songs together in your mind. This song was the only true risk they took on this album besides 505 and to this day remains my favorite arctic monkeys song |

I really don't think there is as much of a change in style of music from their previous albums. I mean it does sound heavier, but tracks like 505 and Only Ones who know where just as heavy in my opinion to most of the tracks on this album. They've just phased out most of the simpler happy-go-lucky melodys of previous works like flourescent adolescent and Leave before the lights come on and for the ppl who say they sound like LSP, they need to take another listen to both albums because they both have a very distinct, very different sound |

The last verse reminds me a bit of Sin City, where the main character Marv thinks the prostitutes sister is actually the prostitute and in the end she lets him call her goldie, which kinda makes me wonder... is it possible that this girl in the last verse is a prostitute? |

I remember when I first heard this song and I thought this is such a great song, but I'll never hear this on the radio. Then like a year later its in commercials for pinnaple express and its like being played in the clubs and at first I was happy M.I.A was getting recognized but few ppl actually know what the song is even about, they just think its another cool accent over a catchy beat which is unfortunate. He needs whatever drug he's taking to wind him up and he has reached a point where he can't really operate creatively without it (My propeller won't spin and I can't get it started on my own). At first I thought it was about a girl as well but lines like "It's a necessary evil" and "Sink into tomorrow" seem to argue a different explaination |

I noticed that the entire 1st and 2nd verses he describes her as a little girl. The image you get when you read the lyrics is that of a small child, and I think he is saying that this girl is like a child - cute on the outside to the point that even the anoying things she does like the games of Crying Lightning are appealing to him, but as he gets to know her he finds out she's more like a spoiled brat and describes her like a princess referring to her throne and her puffing out her chest like she's never lost a war. When he says "There was not cracks to grasp, or gaps to claw" he is recognizing that it is truely over between them and he should let go because the things that attracted him are now the same things that are pushing him away. |

I've been listening to the entire album and I really think that the songs are all related to one relationship and kind of chronologically displays the events as the two people gradually realize that they were not meant to be together. It climaxes in this song which is I think the breakup portion, and this ties in to the next song The time has come again which deals with the guy trying to move on and accept the decision he's made to leave her behind. Listen to the album as a whole and you'll understand what I mean |

Certainly the same concept and subject matter was used that really helps the music flow between both songs when you're listening to it. |
