It's an interesting theory, but i have to disagree. When i think of "when you're on/ I swear you're on" i dont think he's talking about drugs at all, i think being on is a figurative expression meaning that when she's got him in her grasps. Like when she's able to just pop up out of nowhere and do something to really effect his emotions. When she says something sweet, or when she says something mean, she does it in a way that is so effective he can't get it out of his head. Imagine and ex calling you out of the blue becuase they just want to talk, or the ex who want to try to be friends. When she's "on" he means she's on the ball, or on target, that she's figuratively powerful or effective. She can mess with his head. |

This song is so incredibly powerful. I think this song is about someone struggling through a breakup. And being almost at the point of denial but not quite believing it himself. "And we never quite remember, so i'll carve our names in every fence and barely living tree" as if by sheer determination he can reverse the effects of the breakup. It reminds me of that attitude where you cant even imagine going through the rest of your life never holding that person again. You know it's over and it kills you, but you still have trouble really fathoming it's surety. So you do what you can to try and keep it alive. Like using defibrilators a day after someone is declared deceased. This song is so incredible and This band is easily one of my favorites. |

| For me, the most emotional part of the song, and the one that still hurts to hear more than a year after the breakup is " her chest would heave with pride when i was spoken of" because i remember so vividly how proud she was of me everytime i performed on stage, or everytime people commented positively about me. When Nick mentions how much she used to love him, how much she was once proud of him and infers that all of that is now non-existant, that to me is the most real line in the song. Which is incredible because everyword in this song is amazing. I listen to it and feel like i wrote in, of course, in fact im just jealous because i didnt. But this song to me is the most perfect thing i've ever heard. | |
