| The Damnwells – Come To Me Lyrics

This song sounds a lot like Friend of the Devil by The Grateful dead, but Alex's voice sounds so pure here. I really love this song. Grows on me with each listen. You can tell its just raw unedited vocals. Fuck autotune. This is a real singer. |

Becoming one of my favorites from One Last Century. I love the pumping bass and rhythm.
Everybody wants to be on your mind
This line is really good. Quality songwriting from Alex. |

This song kept me happy until the new album was released. Probably in my top 5 Damnwells songs. Great vocals and the added layers on the album version are amazing. |

| Bon Iver – Blindsided Lyrics

No I'm pretty sure he's telling the truth about the song being set in WI. On the myspace transmission video of Blindsided he says this is a song about "Eau Claire, where we're from".
The construction site mathces the nails and boards line. Pretty literal. People have the same idea as me w/ the peering in part. This song is growing on me. I was skeptical at first because I thought Bon Iver was just a hyped up indie band that wasn't that good. BUT, I was wrong and I've been hooked ever since I heard Flume, Lump Sum and Skinny Love in a row the first time I listened to For Emma. Plus I live in Wisconsin and no musicians ever get out and take over the national scene. The Gufs, Bo Deans, and Violent Femmes are WI's best so far. |

During a live show Alex said that this song is "literally about nothing". The lyrics are kind of scattered and this song is made great by the hook and cool guitar. |

| Counting Crows – Catapult Lyrics

Great intro song. I agree with the Kurt Cobain inspiration for this song. Adam went from this small scene in Berkley to being one of the biggest rock stars in the world. That has to change you. Then he saw Kurt Cobain who seemed like he had it all, and Kurt couldn't deal with it and killed himself. I think the lyrics fit Adam's fears about the future stardom and beyond. He did freak out and took time off and ended up a bartender at the Viper Room when they came off tour.
"What a big baby won't somebody save me please
You won't find nobody home"
The "oh poor rock star" idea. Adam got accused of wining after he actually got success. Most people thought August was about wanting to be that big star, see Mr. Jones, and RTS was about dealing with the fame now that it has come. That's right to some degree, but the albums are just so different. RTS is so raw and emotional and is my favorite still after 14 years. The songs are just these amazing emotional statements. I just found an old video of the making of RTS and it blew me away. They filmed a documentary while recording and there are some fabulous interviews about the album. |

| Counting Crows – High Life Lyrics

On the last tour for Saturday Nights and Sunday mornings Adam said, "Its about sort of draining yourself dry living in the hills above Los Angeles. This next song (Los Angeles) is about driving down from the hills into the flats and draining everything else dry. I got drained in "High Life" the bars got drained in the song "Los Angeles".
As you can see both songs are connected. This Desert Life just gets better with age. |

Bob Nanna is a creative genius. All of his acts are amazing: Braid, Hey Mercedes, The City On Film. This song is obviously about Hollywood (For Holly)and the previously mentioned Elliot Smith/Minnie Driver romance. |

| The New Amsterdams – Story Like A Scar Lyrics

Wow, No comments. One of the more powerful songs on the album imo.
Its "Shudder to think" no I shouted the thing. It makes the song, Shudder to think about what could have been.
I think its about seeing an ex or someone you liked once and how your lives are different. Then that person is gone and all you have are memories and dreams of what they would say to you. |

Saw The New Ams live right after Rival came out and Matt played Hughes live for the first time that night at Schuba's. He said its named Hughes after John Hughes. And its about the stereotypes and world in those types of movies. |

Was my favorite song on the album until I let it play through. At The Foot of My Rival is really a solid album. It has grown on me. This song might be about the idea of Heaven, or if this is all there is. The battle of religion vs. atheism. Maybe. |

Great opening song to set the mood of this album. Pretty much self-explanatory. It could be about Matt's relationship with his dad, as in "Overdue" by TGUK. |

I think I see that now tandem. It might be about Fame in general. In live shows he's replaced "like a drunk celebrity" w/ Like a drunk Jason Lee. Great album. |
