Sufjan Stevens – Come On! Feel the Illinoise! (Part 1: The World's Columbian Exposition; Part 2: Carl Sandburg Visits Me in a Dream) Lyrics 17 years ago
With all do respect Kaymac, I completely disagree with the idea that listening to a musician who holds a specific affiliation would mean "buying" into that belief. The whole concept and point of making art is to present a certain idea or concept to the viewer or audience. As I can tell you have good taste because you are posting on a sufjan stevens song, I would only add that if that mindset was true (that consuming something you dont necessarily believe in is "buying into it") then much of the most monumental and renowned artists (playwrites, sculptors, artists, etc) would be missed out by much of society.

On another note, this song really is a beautiful musical piece as well as lyrical. But I think its also important to note the line that Sufjan throws in

Oh, great intentions
Covenant with the imitation
Have you no conscience?
I think about it now

Oh, God of Progress
Have you degraded or forgot us?
Where have your laws gone?
I think about it now

- This sounds to me like sufjan is questioning how much "progress" and "consumerism" if-you-will, has really advanced us and our society. Just a thought.... keep in mind that Sufjan's views seem to be very countercultural in a very humble and sometimes humorous way.

Sufjan Stevens – The Mistress Witch from McClure (Or, the Mind That Knows Itself) Lyrics 17 years ago
Well...considering sufjan is the youngest of his siblings...it is possible that he is singing from the perspective of his older brother.....and maybe sufjan was the younger brother traumatized? Just a thought, sufjan is pretty clever and I wouldn't put it past him. I believe he is by far the most talented and original musician of our time whether you like his music or not.
