Tracy Chapman – Talkin’ ‘Bout A Revolution Lyrics 13 years ago
I love this song, but isn't the lyric:

"Don’t you know, were talkin’ about a revolution. It sounds, like a whisper."

Not "that sounds like a whisper"?

As in, meaning that the people in these lines, in these situations are all whispering and grumbling under their breath about changes needed in the system?

I think the parts of this song where he mentions that she's "feeling older" might refer to the fact that she wanted children and SJ was not at a point where that interested him. I've read that marriage and children were a major contributing factor in their breakup. Part of me thinks the lines "I'd change this song now if I could, in the slickness of your blood" is a reference to this.

Ha ha, the meaning of this song is VERY simple. It's about SJ's hatred and disgust with George W. Bush.

"Incriminating notes on a paper chain" and the "feeling" that we've "been cheated" refer to the questionable elections.

"Time winding down" and "half-measures" refer to how the investigations were only half-assed and never really followed up with.

The stuff about "standards", "cowboy boots", and wanting "clever" but settling "for stupid" are just straight-up knocks at W.

The chorus's lines about "walk on by" and "keep breathing" probably refer to all of the scare tactics after 9-11. We're supposed to be freaked out by Threat Levels and suggestions of bio-weapons.

And, of course, the line about "Good King George" is obvious.

The lines about thugs and crime mock W.'s weak responses to mundane, state and city-level concerns.

When the chorus mentions "this moment will pass", he's talking about how W.'s run is almost up.

The refrain is SJ's plea for people to take a closer look. The lynch pins are the political talking points and the major issues that really matter, instead of the nonsense and mud-slinging that we can be easily distracted by. "Hope we don't get fooled again"

SJ's expresses his disgust with the portions of America which adore and support W. when he mentions the "cold, quick-sell-out, hillbilly nation"

The ending of the refrain mentions sand, soldiers, and "fake enemies". He closes it with a plea to bring the soldiers home.

I thought this was a WONDERFUL political song, however, the album Ursa Major was delayed so long that Bush was out of office when the album was released, so the point never really got across. Bummer.

Is it just me, or are a lot of these lyrics wrong?

"Oh you wanted clever, we settled for stupid
And threw it all away so indiscreet
Like a bad boy afraid he's a dirty little cheat"

=

"Though we wanted clever, we settled for stupid.
You threw it all away, so indiscreet
Like a bad boyfriend, he's a dirty little cheat"

---------------------------------------------------------

"Round up all the big lesbians"

=

"Round up all the big linchpins"

------------------------------------------------------------------

"In this corporate sedative pity nation"

=

"In this cold, quick-sell-out, hillbilly nation"

--------------------------------------------------------------------

"Sanity blows a soldier squeeze
Trigger mark fake enemies
We're all alive and all alone"

=

"Send in loads of soldiers please,
to trip up our fake enemies
We're all abroad and all alone"

------------------------------------------------------------

Just to name a few
