The Shepherd's Dog is the central and conflicted metaphor for the entire song. The Shepherd's dog is only one step away from being a wolf, but it is meant to keep the lambs "safe" or at least inline with the Shepherd's guidance. It is the Shepherd's enforcer, even as it is the sheep's main line of defense against the wolves. Is this the Good Shepherd who loves cares and saves the sheep, or is this just a hired hand protecting his investment until the final slaughter. This song is probably about prostitution, but it is also about addiction, dependent relationships, religion gone bad, and any other system that locks people into a world without grace. |

Add my 2 cents here The first verse depicts women trying to escape life within an economically depressed neighborhood where the men either end up dieing of crime related violence or as fodder for the military. The second verse depicts naive but well meaning women who want to engage in some kind of social justice action, but can't see beyond their own shopping mall world to the violence inherent in their own consumerist way of life. In the third verse we understand that both women want a better world for those they cherish and those who will come after them. Will the women be trapped by their own myopic views of the world, or will they learn from each other? |
