Cherry Poppin Daddies – Zoot Suit Riot Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree that it was definitely racial discrimination at the heart of the Zoot Suit Riots, but it would be inaccurate to say it had nothing to do with patriotism. The reason that the zoot suits were made illegal and the white servicemen were so upset with those that wore them was because this was during the era when there were shortages of practically everything in the country and everything was going to help the servicemen defending it. Everyone was called upon to do their duty and do whatever they personally could to help the war effort, mostly by not wasting anything. The Zoot Suits were made illegal because they used about twice as much material as a normal suit in a time when there was a shortage of material. Many of the youth, because it was part of their new culture to wear them, ignored the law and got their suits illegally. Thus, just wearing a zoot suit during this time was considered unpatriotic and uncaring about the plight of the country. This was a large part of what sparked the riots, thus why they were called the Zoot Suit Riots. All the stuff about only the hispanic youth getting arrested for fighting back and the newspapers praising the sailor's activities is unfortunately true though.

Smoking Popes – Megan Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song because it's one of those no one really gets until they really think about it. It really does have a straight forward interpretation once you understand it.

In the first verse he's sad over something that happened with Megan. He' sitting on the tracks, almost drives off them when a train is coming, but thinks about Megan and doesn't. That's right, no suicide attempts. He actually dies in the first verse, which is the key to understanding the song. He doesn't drive off the tracks and gets hit.

In the second verse he's in line to enter heaven (clean air, sun never goes down, stairs, etc.). And as they call him up the stairs to enter, he leaves to look for Megan.

The 3rd verse, very sad, he's still dead but goes back and sits on the tracks, hoping to find Megan. This is touching because it's almost like a lost, wandering spirit, searching for his love. Well, eventually an angel comes to him, comforts him, and takes him to heaven.

If you read the lyrics, this is the only interpretation that makes complete and total sense. That's why I love the song though because you can hear it so many times, but until you realize he dies at the end of the first verse, you don't quite understand it.
