| The Beatles – Come Together Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| What butterfingersbeck said on 03/18/02 was accurate. The way it went down was, on the day his conviction was overturned, Timothy Leary announced his candidacy for Governor of California, running against Ronald Reagan. His campaign slogan was "Come together, join the party." On 1 June 1969, Leary joined John Lennon and Yoko Ono at their Montreal Bed-In and Lennon subsequently wrote Leary a campaign song called "Come Together." Leary was also present when Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono recorded Give Peace A Chance during one of their bed-ins in Montreal and is mentioned in the lyrics of the song. He's actually a really interesting guy, I recommend his book 'Flashbacks', or check him out on wikipedia or something. He's really interesting to read about...to summarize...he's a shrink who prescribed LSD in studies he performed! | |
| The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Paul McCartney recently said "Eleanor Rigby is a totally fictious character that I made up," McCartney said in a statement released to AFP by his publicists. McCartney has previously said the name Eleanor was inspired by actress Eleanor Bron, who starred in the Beatles film "Help!" in 1965 and that Rigby came from the name of a wine merchant. This was found on Yahoo news. |

| Jerry Lee Lewis – Great Balls of Fire Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| So I was reading about Jerry Lee Lewis on Wikipedia and it was talking about this song being viewed as controversial, and it wasn't associated with the whole, marrying his cousin thing. It made it out that this song was offensive in some way. Is there some other way to view this song that I'm not getting? Because I don't think I see how this is offensive. | |

Alright, so to everyone who keeps just popping around and saying...Yay....I love this song. That's not what this site is about. It's about SONG MEANINGS...just as it says. You're SUPPOSED to interpret the songs, that's why the site is here, so I'm going to tell you all what this means. This is the truth, so just brace yourself, and remember...you heard it here first. There are several events within a song that are being written here. The first verse is broken down to: A woman who is taken in by material posessions, and believes that by aquiring those posessions she can dwell in heaven here on Earth. So devoted is she in fact that even if when she arrives, the stores will open for her. The second verse would lead you to believe that it's picking up from the 1st but it's not. It's the beginning of a new story and it's picking up after a thought has already been started. A naive woman is seeking to unravel the misteries and get some straight answers. Like from the songbird who sings in the tree by the brook, sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven, and it DOES make you wonder. Ya know? Third verse starts a whole different thought. This is the way things were done back then. You were expanding your mind(often with drugs) so you didn't have to stick within' the confines of a direct line of reason. The 3rd verse is a narative one. They're HIS feelings...He's being drawn to the west and he is hungering to be there, while at the same time he reflects on a trip he took to the woods with his friends who were blowing smoke rings. He could see them through the trees. They were passing around 2 joints and those who weren't smoking were just on-lookers...he's pondering all of this. The fourth verse is a referance to modern day organized religion. What he meant when he said "and it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune" is that if enough people subscribe to a common religion then their faith will carry them where they choose(Then the piper will lead us to reason). It's actually extremely forward thinking on his part. It's one of the principles laid down in Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsh and "The Secret" that's been so popular as of late. He then goes on to say that a new time will arrive, a golden age if you will that will lead to happiness ever after(echo with laughter). The fifth is a tricky one to interpret and you would never know if they didn't tell you. When it says "If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, It's just a spring clean for the May queen." That was taken from a poem that his savant nephew James had written. HE interpretted it as there being two paths, vis a vie cleanliness is next to godliness, and "there's still time to change the road your'e on" basically means you've still got time to clean up your act. It makes him wonder because he doesn't know if he's ready to do that yet. I really think he pulled this one off pretty concordantly. Verse six is my favorite. It starts to bring a lot of what he's been saying together by way of a device(a drunk with a hangover). His head is humming and it won't go, but the piper(organized religion)'s calling you to join him. "Dear lady can you hear the wind blow" is clearly the writers reference to materialism and dependence as he says her stairway lies on the whispering wind(or breath). Brilliant. Simply brilliant. It's a shame they don't write em' like this anymore. The final verse is of course speaking of always impending death. Your shadow grows taller than your soul as the sun is going down, and of course the recurring lady we keep hearing about is already dead, drowned by her own materialism. She glows now in death of course though as do we all when we've gone and by then we've reached our final reward(everything turns to gold). If you listen very hard the tune will come to you at last(this was actually a double meaning. It refers to both the power of thought driving your fate, and the constant focus it took for him to devise the tune for the song...oddly enough it was stolen according to that previous poster) When all are one and one is all is a reference to each of us as beings being like drops of water, re-joining the ocean(god). To be a rock and not to roll is another way of saying we become earth...and of course the Earth spins, it doesn't roll. Dumbass. Yeah...so that's it. If you have any questions just let me know. |

| The Beautiful South – Let Love Speak Up Itself Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think it's about faith. Another word I believe to be synonymous with faith is love. I view god as being pure love, so I think, at least in part, that it talks of gaining strength and comfort from the feelings of love you can feel from spirituality. "So when you feel a little tatty and unhappy with your face Let it breathe into us and put you back in place" It must sound a bit funny for me to be saying this. I'm not a 'Jesus Freak' or anything...but I am spiritual, and the lyrics that were sang here really resonate with my feelings on spirituality. Any other thoughts? |

| The Beautiful South – I'll Sail This Ship Alone Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I agree with shine, I think they're singing to the person who won't put the relationship first, saying they'd rather be alone than to be with someone who won't make the choice to see them exclusively. Also, If they can't be with you they'll be alone and that they'd rather be with Mr or Ms. X than find someone better or worse (Sharks and the treasure). | |
| The Beautiful South – Good As Gold (Stupid As Mud) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Shine I like the way you phrased it. I was kind of thinking of it as an anthem of the working class. Wanting whats just beyond reach, wanting gold not silver, and striving to reach it and make it your reality. | |
| The Beautiful South – Dream a Little Dream of Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| So this song is about being completely and utterly enamoured with someone special and wanting them to be peacefully wisked away in their dreams with thoughts of you as you spend your nights with them in your thoughts. This was mine and my ex'es song. | |
| The Beautiful South – Don't Marry Her Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think this sounds like someone patronizing someone for settling. She's mad about him, but is a free spirit and wants him to look to her, but he's settled for some prude who doesn't leave him with any luster. He's slowly dying inside as is she because she's watching this man she's mad over settle for some cow. Sorry. I went on a bit there. | |
| The Beautiful South – Closer Than Most Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Alright, so I'm having a hard time with this song. Partially because the words keyed in for the lyrics here are wrong, and I can't remember all the right ones. At any rate, I can't come up with an interpretation for the right ones either. Anybody got anything? | |
| The Beautiful South – Bell Bottomed Tear Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Yeah I agree, it sounds like a woman being self conscious and vulnerable deeply dissatisfied with her regular life and she is turning to fantasy so she can wear a plastic smile. Melancholy morning after feelings. Regreting that she had the fantasy and that she needs it. She is fantasizing that the one she was spending her evening with was nearly in love with her as she is with him. | |
| The Beautiful South – A Little Time Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Yeah I agree. It sounds like he's reached the point in his relationship where he just doesn't know. Does he want to stick it out? Does he still have the same feelings he's always had? Sounds like me an' my ex actually. LOL! | |
| The Beautiful South – 36D Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think it's about knowing someone who has potential to be more and trying to show them the possibility exists for them to be more than the victim they are allowing themselves to be. | |
