His reference to Descartes might be from his second meditation where I'm pretty sure he talks about how we can't ever know anything directly, only indirectly through our senses. So, Descartes pretty much separated our minds from the world and I think the only link to the world he found was that he thought, he is. Dustin could be referencing him to talk about distancing ourselves from reality.. in all of society, the way people play the game trying to get people to like them or trying to use people.. all of what we do is fake and has an agenda, so no wonder our tears are just a curse and have no meaning amidst all of the other people faking their emotions to get what they want. The gain in being true to ourselves and the people around us seems to have been lost. I think the beginning is talking about relationships destroyed because of that problem that what we think is reality (through our senses) doesn't match up to what reality really is. He thought he had people/friends to comfort him, but he awoke cold and alone, and instead of warm arms wrapped around him, they were actually nets (maybe referring to people's agendas) well, that's my go at it, but i still don't completely understand it.. |

| oops just read the whole thing.. definitely seems like a metaphor describing God (or any relationship involving blind love, maybe the relationship between a parent and child), which draws on our relationship with air. He concludes that the giver is "hated upon" or "cursed" more than he/she is "loved back" or "praised" | |

| I think any critical thinker would realize the opposite. It makes sense as a metaphor describing God, as, I'm sure, it makes sense as the metaphor it drew upon. | |

And after all of this, I am amazed That I am cursed far more than I am praised whenever I hear this, it makes me think of a person reflecting on their life, and seeing that what comes of everything they strived to achieve has cursed them more than the accolades they thought would come from it.. but that's not considering the rest of the poem.. |

I think it could be about the never-ending search for truth/answers. The first stanza, to me, seems to be talking about searching for answers, not being able to find them, and being changed by the fact the we couldn't find them. I think the second stanza is about how in the search for answers, we can lose sight of what really matters, such as showing love to other people. When we try to understand why searching for answers can make us lose sight of what's important, we end up going down the same road of rationalization.. we tried to bleed the sickness, but we drained our hearts instead In going down this path of rationalization, we lose what's important in life, and therefore lose what life we had. We are the dead. When you rationalize too much, i think it's easy to lose your faith and as i said earlier, lose sight of what's truly important |

i'm thinking along the same lines as you i think.. is this your salvation? is this all you can give? i will not stand in reflection of someone else’s dream i think he's talking about other peoples' aspirations/dreams.. is this what saves you from meaninglessness? is this what gets you through life? is this what gives you meaning? is this your salvation? is this way that you live your life, seeing as it's the influence you have on how other people live their life.. what you pass to other people through your influence.. is this all you can give? I will not live like you. I will not take on your dreams, your aspirations, your gods as my own. I will not base my existence on the way other people live their lives. I will not stand in reflection of someone else's dream. |
