I see the lyrics are fvgd up now. The song said: did he mention my age, luv. So this means whoever is enquiring about the brother is familiar with his sibling. So it seems to me this is "girls talk". That's why she says she doesn't have the courage to ask the brother, so she's talking to the sister, like girls talk. And well, my impression that this is some sort of sick game, not really usual love. That's why she says the bit about being worried about her age. Cause my guess is it's actually his mother. This is about incest and role-playing, and evolution. That's why the song is named "pass this on", because it's about genes actually. The mother is figuratively speaking evolution seducing her offspring to make her twisted genes get passed on and survive. She says "does he know what I do" which shows she is trying to pass for somebody else, to look like she's just another girl, when she isn't. She's role-playing. |

the knife is a feeling; the birds, no one knows who they are but they fly in time. the way the one who sings approaches the brother is from the distance, like they feel inferior or like they have a secret. there's a secret about the birds, about all the other small voices who sing "I wasn't really looking for some more than some company on the dance floor i like to picture the transvestite as being evolution, the mother of all living beings. if you think about it, how could evolution create transvestites? isn't that weird? it should be impossible, because someone who is into crossdressing is not going to attract other women, have kids and pass their genes on. they're only going to do it as men. but then, why crossdress if it's against evolution? that's exactly the idea that the knife has come up with: why not have a transvestite impersonate evolution, because it's its weirdest product? as I said some months ago, these guys are into weird atmosphere, they want to take exactly the element that doesn't fit in the whole picture and show it, make it dance in the middle of the dancefloor on some nice, melancholy music. so evolution has a child who grows up as a boy, whom "she" wants to seduce, to check if he is willing to play with her or not. "she" is so old and addicted to love that is concerned that her age might be an issue. she is like a jealous mother, who looks at her boy and sees his father when he was young and naive and she was playing with his mind. she doesn't want to lose him to other younger girls, so she would like to seduce him into her pervert ways and tell his sister to do her job and pass her genes on while she eats her boy's head. |

You're right, the lyrics show something else. But if you check their MySpace blog, they posted the *official* rendition of their Oracular Spectacular lyrics. Here's what they wrote in Weekend Wars (coincidentally, this is the default song in the player right now): "chryst is curst of faders and maders might even take a knife to split a hair" Obviously, it's Christ, not Chryst and if the spelling of "faders and maders" would be correct, then they should pronounce the words like you pronounce the verb "to fade" and the past participle "made". But there's no such word as "maders". So I thought: hey, this is tongue-in-cheek, they purposely mispelled them for some reason, like they did with the misattribution of the quote from Nietzsche in their latest Kids video... If you want people to take a lot of interest in your works as an artist you sometimes do stuff like that, it's called artistic license. I said I don't know what they actually say in the beginning of the song. It sounds like S.I.S., and since there's a reference to an urgency to find a shore, I thought that it must be some play on words with "S.O.S." but I can't say exactly which one. It sure doesn't make much sense to say "Evil SI yes to find a shore". Feel free to propose another explanation. |

There are a few mistakes in the rendering of this song. The song begins with the singer playing on the "S.O.S." message reference, so I don't think that he says "yes". More like an "S.O.S." to find a shore, but not exactly an S.O.S. either. It seems to be an esoteric reference to something spelled "S.I.S." Of course, it must be "too lazy to bathe", but that's probably a typo. I think the correct verse is: "Christ is cursed of fathers and mothers" No idea what it means in the English idiom, but in East European countries this is often used. You can say "Fuck your mother's Christ and God!" If this is correct, it might have something to do with someone losing hif faith. Actually the whole song is about going back to New Age archaic beliefs by relating to the most basic elements of spirituality - light and love. |

The song is about the frustration of trying to make an impossible change, one that rests on immutable shores. To this end, one would sacrifice almost anything, his "humanity" that looks questionable already, going back to roots, trying to grasp a savage intelligibility on things. When all the mental mystics have failed to account for the contradictory images flashing on one's eyes and in the back of one's mind, the person reverts to an archaic form of oneself, a primitive that only relies on brute force to procure all the bare necessities - lunch and sex, without any care for thought or emotion. This is the tragedy of the modern man, the one encaged in the cities of a civilisation built on lies and the fear of death. Does he have any real emotions anymore, or maybe just socially negotiated outlets and set expectations for his domesticated feelings? Children and young people enter this monstruous urban machinery of identities, that expects them to learn, behave, be polite, eat regularly, grow up, study, get jobs, pay taxes and become a cog in this political machine. For a long time in Western civilisation, holidays have been like a return to paradise, to a lost nature that man wants to reconnect with by working all around the year just to get a chance at getting there for a few weeks, on those calm shores. Just the same, weekends were supposed to ease the pressure built up during the week in the urban machinery of work and duty and allow someone to get away from it all. Paradoxically, some actually had to go through even greater hardship during the weekends just to be able to be someone during the next week. These are the weekend warriors, people who have to fight during the weekend just to be able to find who they really are. These are a new kind of warriors, modern ones, artificial warriors, just as people going to the gym look like art-ificial heroes, pumped up with special nutrition and chemicals. All this giant effort for the art-ificial effect of looking like someone who is someone in the city. Somewhere along this path human instincts have been distorted. Some manage to adapt to the machinery I described, others are rejected and live on the fringes of society, harbouring feelings of anger and planning their own personal armageddon on this world. This type of urban man, as I explained, reverts to a primeval state of emotional reactions, is easy to anger and prime for aggressive retaliation. This is what "instant battle plans written on the sidewalk" means: the person is quick to draw an emotional weapon on anyone who slights him while walking through the urban grid. He has uncouth reactions, scaring the kids off the lawn, and planning for an imaginary revenge on others ("Giving us time to make the makeshift bombs"). One of the causes of the Columbine school shooting was that the parents of the kids who committed the shooting had banned them from using their computers, because they were spending too much time playing video games. This is what deprived the two teenagers of their virtual world where they used to vent. They "couldn't use computers anymore" too, as the guys in the this song, so they started planning for a massive bombing of their school. It might be something related to their going back to roots, though. The trip to Arizona seems to be an esoteric reference. It might have something to do with a Wild at Heart organisation there... Going back to roots requires one to learn how to deal with animal life in the wild properly. Maybe going back in the wild will rekindle one's lost instinct, "grow the arm back", make the change while synching to the natural vibes of the sand and cold. "My predictions are the only things I have" Usually people who can make predictions are those who lost their life somehow. Tiresias who was able to penetrate the sacred secret of sex and time was blinded by gods and then given the gift of profecy. He could see the future, but he could neither prevent it nor live his life. The last stanza is just negative affect related to this realisation. Someone stuck in his inner world of images and mental mystics who doesn't find the power/instict to just be in a natural and normal way. He has to constantly process and relate to what is expected from him by the civilisation he lives in. |

| The Knife don't write light, lowbrow stuff, IMO. They're into weirdness, atmosphere and mood. They come from Sweden. Therefore, it must be psychological and sexual to the bone. Whoever says in a saddened tone that they are in love with the girl's brother feels a bit guilty about what they "do". They have hesitations - maybe the brother is not into someone older, they are jealous of the sister's close relationship with her brother and would like to partake in some of that closeness. They look at him like a mother looks at her growing up boy, jealous on any younger girl with died hair who might come to take him away and make her lose her heart. She wants to keep him for herself and for that purpose, she gets into a little role-playing, to forget the guilt: her son is no longer her son, it's just a close girl's brother, she doesn't even know his name, is he willing to role-play like she is? If she succeeds in seducing her boy, the sister would be responsible with passing this - her genes - on. Sister and brother, they share their mother's health. | |

i think it all depends on what selling your soul means. if he's simply saying that the devil is already in him/us, then it's rather shallow. but the context of the song was probably about wanting to be a rockstar and how narcissistic is that desire to be recognised as a special type of person that needs everyone's adoration and love, sort of like the christ put himself in front of the crowds. he could be saying many things related. the desire to be a "rockstar" is narcissistic, it comes from the devil, you don't get it by selling your soul, it's already in those charismatic people who need to stand out in the crowd. it's like a drug, you need it all the time just to feel you're worth something. narcissism is an infantile attitude in an adult: you don't need to relate to others and be mature about it by recognising their emotions and responding with yours, you require them to admire you just because you feel you deserve that. It's sort of - I don't need to actually DO SOMETHING about it ("sell my soul"), because I'm innocent like a child, I never did anything to have that in me, just let things come to me and love me because I need this - being adored, being a rockstar. It's a state, like being high on your best remedy to your worst problem. |
