This is a.... simple song. It is imagery, words from a visitor from far off. It's his time to go, but he is reluctant. Reluctant to leave the children of the sun(Mankind). But before he leaves, he's giving one small piece of advice. |

The first verse strongly and pointedly outlines a descent from kingdom to peasantry. But it doesn't specify why. It could be loss of power through revolutionaries, or it could be willful handing off of rulership as a result of discovering something greater. The second verse is reminiscence on how he came to power, playing the games and taking the risks, driving fear into his enemies. When he overtook the kingdom, people cried his name in pride and support "The old king is dead, long live the king" puts emphasis on this. However, he realizes that everything he's done to get to this point is horrible atrocity and what he has gained won't last. This is stated in "Upon pillars of salt and sand" and echoed in "It was a wicked and wild wind". In the chorus, we see this new view is through religion, and as he rules, he hears Islam coming from the distance, as well as the armies of other kings and emperors coming for him(Jerusalem bells and Roman cavalry choirs). It is in the chorus which his outlook takes a radical shift. "Be my mirror" show my enemies their atrocities and show me mine, "My sword" to fight the conflicts and pierce the will of our foes, "my shield" to protect our people from the will of our foes. "My missionaries in a foreign field" is literal; my advocates in other lands, spreading our word of peace. In the first chorus, the line "Now that you're gone there was never, never an honest word" is saying that without his deity in his mind, when he's feeling abandoned, there is nothing true in the world. In the second chorus, "For some reason I can't explain, I know St. Peter won't call my name" is his personal feelings, he feels that the sins which he committed to come to power are unforgivable, so no matter what good he does, he will never step forth to the gates of Heaven. The next verse is saying that he came to power in a random and evil way. Revolutionaries were waiting to kill him and take the throne(just as he had done). "Just a puppet on a lonely string" means he was feeling like he was stuck there, that he never really wanted to be king. I feel the entire song is focused on "I know St. Peter won't call my name". The concept behind I feel is; "I know I've done horrible, evil things. I repent by spreading the word of my Lord. But I feel nothing I do will cleanse the stain of my atrocities. I continue on spreading the word, even knowing this." |
