Amanda Palmer – I Google You Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the song was written by Neil Gaiman.

And Amanda is right, hello_ily. It really should be a funny song, but it's just... right on the nail. The internet has made stalking your ex's mega-easy. XD

The Decemberists – The Rake's Song Lyrics 17 years ago
I transcribed these lyrics from a live version. I believe this song is going to be on their new album Hazards of Love which is due out in April 2009.

This is definitely one of The Decemberists' darker songs. Right up there with "The Culling of the Fold", "Mariner's Revenge Song", and "The Tain".

Although there is not a lot to read into this song. It is simply the tale of a bachelor unable and unwilling to adjust to a life of responsibility.

Amanda Palmer – The Point of It All Lyrics 17 years ago
While drugs do seem to play a minor role in this song, I don't believe that the "needle" is completely a metaphor for drug use, but instead more of an analogy for fixing your problems. Needles are used to mend clothing or sew two pieces of cloth together.

I think the song is more about having a friend who has gone through something devastating. As his/her friend you try to help by taking them out, making jokes, going on trips, but in the end they are the only ones with the needle. That is, they are the only ones with the means to fix or mend their own situation.

"June makes these excellent sewing machines out of common industrial waste
She spends a few days at a time on the couch, but she's safe
she wears shades, she wears shades"

This is one of the few instances I believe references drug abuse. June uses "sewing machines" as a quick fix to her problems, instead of taking the time and work to put her life back together stitch by stitch. Her "sewing machines made of common industrial wastes" are clearly homemade drugs used to separate herself from her disasterous reality.
