| according to an interview with National Public Radio (NPR), one of the callers actually asked a question to Rob and Zach about some of the meanings in some of their songs. They just told the caller to keep guessing. So I guess to those people who actually asked Pinback about song meaning in person, don't believe every word that was coming out of their mouth. There could be multiple meanings jammed into one song for all we know. Don't believe me? check out the NPR website http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=15098248. They posted the entire interview and listen to the full show | |

After hearing the song multiple times, I believe this song is about a person suffering from a severe punishment for some petty incident like surfing and knocking over a sand castle. And the person suffers from great grievance and it consumes his or her life. The repetition of the song and the mention of sisiphus show how one wrong step in life often come back to haunt you for the rest of your life. All and all, I think the theme of the song is the repetition of suffering. It happens over and over again, non stop. |

| Basically what devsil11 said, it fits within the context of the lyrics. Another song about a very important historical war. In this case, involved the Greek and the Roman. This song feels like a one of two parts song pairing up with Byzantine... | |

| i find it kinda unorthodox for them to all of a sudden sing about a song about boy and girl relationship when many of their previous song has historical meanings and political criticisms behind their lyrics. | |

| I believe the song in general is about to sides with opposing thinking and how their differences lead their relationship towards a downward spiral. In my opinion though, I am thinking about something war like, probably some kind of superpower struggle and the war they have lead to some negative effect to many people. Putting innocent people in constant fear and possible health problems war bring. | |

At the beginning, the river has no water and is being referred to a ditch When they sing about paving the way for the manta ray, I am actually thinking they are just using it as a metaphor for water. Manta Ray's color is blue and the way they swim feels like they are gliding and merging with water. The ditch they referred to are now filled with water. And the next section feels like they are referring to suicide. When they begin to sing Sometimes wish there was a slide out my window Sometimes wish there was a flume ride at Wonderland That way, no one's gonna steal your wallet Buried in the sand under your blanket, I believe they refer to not wanting to go to heaven and hope they have an option to slide back down to earth. Like a flume ride and wonderland refers to heaven. The wallet is your identity because we carry important identification documents with them.Since Lyon was originally called the 'city of light' I thought this make sense. |

Lyon is a city in Europe. If you picture the place with the lyrics, it will make quite a bit of sense. The city is based on two large hills and there is a long river between it. I guess the song is about the separation of people within one city. Think of the city as a huge exaggerated ditch with a river running below it. In fact, I found most of the earlier songs from pinback are referencing to european history and cities. |
