Motion City Soundtrack – A Life Less Ordinary (Need a Little Help) Lyrics 15 years ago
it's too bad this band doesn't put the lyrics in their CD sleeve. I would have preferred that over the crappy dinosaur artwork they filled it with instead.

anyways I think the first verse is "conquered odds and Christmases alone" conquered odds makes sense, conquered eyes doesn't

Alkaline Trio – Those Lungs Lyrics 15 years ago
first of all the first line is "now i lay me down to pass out wasted again"

when i first heard this song i thought it was about a couple that fights a lot and is kind of on and off but how they always reconcile in the end.

however, after hearing the song a few times and really paying attention to the lyrics i think it's actually about having a long distance relationship and the toll that it can take. i think it's about how Dan misses his wife when he goes on the road and looks forward to coming home to see her.

Alkaline Trio – Kick Rocks Lyrics 16 years ago
the bridge is "i tried to write you a classic but you're holding out for the flick. wait by the exit out back when they don't let you in"

i don't think it's a song about a break up as much as a past relationship:

i think the sticks and stones part is about someone who has been made fun of or someone who has a lot of problems. the part about the fire can be taken two different ways, either it symbolizes the person's rage over what has been done to them and they have no way to contain it anymore so they just unleash it on everyone. in the other hand it could also be like the sticks and stones and it's just another thing that has happened to the person and they can't stop what's being done to them so they just endure and let it happen. after whatever it is that happened is done the person goes back to the singer's house because they have nowhere else to go. i'm guessing the part that says "i couldn't find what you wanted" is talking about how the person needed comfort or support and he didn't provide it for them. the person get angry but later they come crawling back because they realize the singer is their only friend while everyone else picks on them.

the chorus is about wanting to make time stop because of something that is going to happen in the future. if the person the song is about has a lot of problems it's probably about wanting to stop time so they can just be together and not have to deal with the problems ahead. or just wanting to make time stop because they know that it's not going to work out but they want to enjoy the moment as long as they can.

the 3rd verse kind of sounds like they're on the run or just living a fast paced life and overcoming any problems that try to get in their way. and how he misses that sometimes but he kind of grew out of it and got tired of it.

the bridge is basically talking about why things ended between them, either because they wanted different things or what he had to offer wasn't good enough. but maybe the 2nd half of the bridge is about how he would still like to keep in touch with the person? it sounds like he's telling the person if they were to go to a show to try to see him, if they can't get in then to wait by the exit where the band will leave because he'd still like to see them.

it's hard to say what each line means or what the song is actually about because it is very metaphorical like a lot of their songs are. it probably has a lot of personal meaning that people on the outside could never guess exactly what it's all about. i mean if you look at goodbye forever it doesn't really seem to be about what it's really about, the major throw off being the line "at least we're still friends, atleast we're still alive" when it's about a friend's suicide.

this song reminds me a lot of burned is the house. it could be about the same person.

A Rocket to the Moon – Mr. Right Lyrics 16 years ago
i wish they'd let you delete/edit posts on here. upon watching this video again i think at the end the way the curly haired girl looks at the dark haired girl is more like she pitys her rather than her being jealous of her for being happy. she sees the guy she's with and the clothes she's wearing and being a shallow person she looks down at her because of it.

also, when he says "you can be the best of me, when i'm the worst for you" i think that's he's talking about how he feels she's the only thing he's got going for him, she's the only thing good in his life and he feels he has nothing to offer her in return.

A Rocket to the Moon – Mr. Right Lyrics 16 years ago
first of all i think it's "CAN always change your mind, and you can't change mine"

i think some of the other posts have the right idea. But i from listening to the lyrics and watching the video i think the point is more that he might not be good enough for her but at least he makes her happy.

if you look at the video there are two couples. there's the couple with the curly haired girl who seems to have the wealthier boyfriend. he buys her nice clothes and buys her nice meals and nice gifts. He's got a car and he drives her around but she doesn't appreciate any of it and pays more attention to her phone than she does to him.

then you see the other couple with the girl with the dark hair with the blue streaks in it. she has a poor boyfriend. it shows them shopping at a thrift store, eating burgers on a curb, she needs to drive him around because he can't afford a car and when it's her birthday he gives her a cupcake because he can't afford to buy her anything but she is happy with him and doesn't need him to spoil her at all.

when it shows the two couples at the end the girls hug and afterwards the curly haired girl glares at her as she walks away because she's jealous of how happy the other girl is. during the whole video it makes the point to show how disappointed the curly haired girl's boyfriend is that she doesn't appreciate any of the stuff he does for her like the whole time he's thinking "what a bitch" and that she's probably just staying with him for the status of dating a guy with money even though she doesn't like him.

i know that the meaning of songs and the meaning of videos don't always match up but it is something to consider.

just paying attention to the lyrics i'd say that he's saying that he is crazy about his girlfriend. he only has eyes for her but he doesn't really know what she sees in him when there are plenty of other guys who might be better suited for her that she could be with.

i think the chorus and meaning of the song is more about how the rest of society sees their relationship than what he really thinks about it. that's why it says "maybe i'm a shot in the dark" because he's not society's ideal picture of a good boyfriend so she's taking a chance at being with him rather than going for the wealthier guy who can take care of her. she's the "morning light" because it's easy to see why he'd want to be with her. but he's saying that despite that maybe he is the right guy for her and maybe he can make her happy and that she should give him a chance because she can always change her mind but he knows that he'll always want to be with her.

it's about how some people will see a beautiful girl who seems to have the whole package and could probably get any guy she wanted but she's with some "loser" who is poor and not very good looking and they think she deserves better than that guy and wonder what she sees in him. this song is coming from the point of view of the guy she's with who nkows that that's what people are thinking when they see them together.

Alkaline Trio – Over and Out Lyrics 16 years ago
actually i remember reading an article on the internet in early 2009 that said Matt Skiba wrote the 2nd and 3rd verse based on an article he read about a soldier dying at war and then the woman at home is his wife getting the phone call that he died so your friend had the right idea. I don't know if the woman that the verse is based on actually killed herself though it didn't say it just said that there's no pain no answering no more is based on the fact that the husband no longer be in pain because he died and she wouldn't be dreading answering the phone every time it rang, thinking that ti would be bad news about him.

The Living End – In The End Lyrics 16 years ago
First of all i would like to say that I am from Canada and I like this band a lot. A friend of mine recommended them to me a few years ago after she found them on myspace. I don't know anyone else who has heard of this band though. I doubt they get played on the radio here at all. I don't think the problem is Australians not knowing about this site, what we should focus on is letting the world know about The Living End.

Now, I think that the other comments here have a pretty good general idea of what the song is about. If i were to sum up this song i'd say that it is about dealing with life and how confusing ("trying hard to understand what happened yesterday")and frustrating ("have you ever wondered why the truth is hard to say? why must it be this way?")it can be sometimes and how sometimes there is just no avoiding the crap that comes at you ("there's no explanation or a plan that you can make and you can't hide away") and you aren't always going to get what you want ("but everything that you want is not gonna go your way")but in the end that's just life and you need to deal with it.

that is what the general concept of the song is but as a songwriter i know that many songs are often about something specific and then generalized to make them more relatable to the audience. If i had to take a stab at what this song is really about i'd have to say it's about job layoffs or getting fired from a job over some sort of misunderstanding or something that wasn't your fault in a "shit happens" sort of way. I say this because the part that says "powers above us show that you love us don't take me away" would probably be viewed by many as some sort of religious appeal to god to not make you die for your sins or something. but judging by songs like "how do we know" and "raise the alarm" this doesn't seem to be the type of band who would write about something like that. other possible "powers" that the song writer could be referring to is the government or the higher ups in a company and since this band has a lot of songs about work ("long live the weekend", "roll on", "i want a day") i'm guessing it could be about working in a place and knowing that you won't be working there much longer and it's not going to be your choice or just finding out that you lost your job. it could all fit if you look at each verse:

verse 1 - about how companies will often lie about layoffs coming and then suddenly roll out the guillotine and cut 50 people at a time and how sometimes the reasons for the layoffs can be corrupt. for instance, they say they are losing money when really the people in charge are pocketing it all.

verse 2 - the part about broken deals could be referring to the contract signed at the beginning of employment and now they're breaking the deal and giving you a package to compensate.

verse 3 and 4 - about how you couldn't really do anything to avoid it and it's not what you wanted but that's just how it is sometimes.

anyways. i'm not saying that's what the song is about it's just a possibility. it could just be about the general meaning described earlier or it could have a deeper meaning. there are a lot of songs out there that are about death or breaking up that are based on events where no one died and no one broke up.

Alkaline Trio – Burned Is the House Lyrics 16 years ago
To me this song i about a relationship that has gone sour and realizing that you would have been better off just as friends.

the first verse being about meeting someone new and hitting it off. How things were before the problems started, before you really knew the person very well.

the 2nd verse is talking about the beginning of the relationship and where things may have started to go wrong. i think the words are actually "walked through a cemetary archway into a wood that hummed so happily along, but the words were all wrong" like when someone will sing along to a song and they think it means one thing but it's because they have the words wrong. it's talking about how it might have been good in the beginning but they weren't meant to be together, something isn't right

"Burned is the house, gone is the street, here lies the same disappointing retreat" is referring to the positive outlook you had when you first met the person, thinking that things would work out really well between you two but then when they don't, those dreams are destroyed.

"but we can never go back there again, we can only hope to forget"
"and i need it like hell if i lie to myself to think i could live that life over again" - these lines mean that you remember the good times with the person and wish things could be that way again, but you know it would never work out that way so it's better to just forget and move on.

"where the cuts were like guilt and the taste for you eyes, i'd say we're up when i couldn't just say goodnight" - is talking about how you wish you could have just left it at being friends and that's it despite any feelings of attraction you had for the person be it emotional (the guilt=emotions) or superficial (taste for your eyes=beauty) "i'd say we're up when i couldn't just say goodnight" means that if you could do it over again, you would have just stayed friends, you would have just said goodnight and left rather than spending the night and sleeping together, becoming something more.

"if you cry me a river you could baptize me in i'd say i guess that's it now i've fucking seen everything now" - suggests that the person you are with played the crying card a lot. going back the to "where the cuts were like guilt" this person probably had a lot of sob stories to tell from her past, uses them to make people feel sorry for her. he probably fell for it and felt like he had to take care of her. whenever they had a fight she would probably try to cry to get her way.

the 3rd verse is talking about how the other person always makes things hard for themselves. they are the type of person who is usually the cause of their own problems and then complains when things go badly. "jumped overboard... when the sun shines on the sea" this line is referring to the old saying about how the grass is always greener on the other side. this person will throw everything away (jump overboard) just to get something that they think is better but then later the realize that it isn't but by then it's too late. this is supported by the line "you traded all my inaffections for direction to a party across town" she probably left the relationship because she thought she had found something better but it turned out that it wasn't and now she has screwed herself over. "it's just as deep as you can make it, you tread water when you COULD stand on your knees" is talking about how the person makes problems for herself and then instead of dealing with the problems she makes them worse. a good example of this would be a person who has gambling dept to pay off but keeps gambling and losing more money or a person who owes a lot of credit debt but then wastes all their money on manicures and shoes and gets deeper and deeper in dept or someone with a drug or alcohol addiction ruining their life (maybe having health problems because of it) and just drowning their sorrows and letting the addiction continue rather than trying to quit. "but don't pray to me" means don't ask me for help "because when the lamp rays taken all it can it will bleed you dead" is referring to how the person has gotten themselves in too deep and are a hopeless case, whatever problem that it is they have, they just let it get worse and worse.

"you were the 1st real choice i would make, but we all make mistakes" - is probably talking about the sacrifices he had to make to be the with person and now realizes that it was a mistake.

Alkaline Trio – Over and Out Lyrics 17 years ago
If you read what phrasethatpays posted, it's quite obvious that it's not ALL about suicide. there are 4 stories about people dying.

the first one is the one that Matt Skiba mentions about his grandmother. It isn't about suicide it's about an old woman who lived out her life and is on her deathbed surrounded by loved ones who are sad to see her go. she says "for what it's worth it doesn't hurt, don't cry" because although she does not want to die she has a sense of fulfillment and is satisfied with what she has accomplished in her life and may even have religious beliefs that she will be going to a better place once she dies.

the 2nd part is about the family member that was in WW2 and killed himself.

the other two stories aren't explained in that post.

the key to the 3rd one is the part that says "it seems i've run out of time" which leads me to think it's not about suicide but being killed by someone or something when time runs out. 3 main things i think about when i hear this part is either a man who has a disease and has been given a certain amount of time to live from the doctor, like when the doctor tell you that you have cancer and he can't do anything for you and you only have 8 months to live. the other thing i think about is maybe a guy who owes money to the mob but can't pay up, they give him a certain amount of time to pay before they kill him. before you say "why would he be telling the guys who are killing him to tell his wife he loves her?" well if you were writing the song what else would you write in that place that would still fit in with the song? it's a bit ambiguous and doesn't really come out and say it like the 1st 2. the third thing it could mean is just about a guy dying unexpectedly in some way, maybe after an accident, and accepting that "his time has come" so to speak and before he dies he tells the person who is with him to tell his wife he loves her since she is not there for him to tell her himself. this one probably makes the most sense since everything fits and it would make sense why the wife wasn't there if the death was the result of an unexpected accident where it doesn't make as much sense for why she wouldn't be there if he was dying from a disease. also if matt skiba wrote it about someone he knew it would make more sense that the person died of an accident rather than being killed by the mob as there wouldn't really be anyways to know for sure since the mob would make it look like an accident anyways.

the key to figuring out the 4th story is the part that says "There's no pain, no answering no more" the answering isn't exactly talking about answering the telephone but is actually referring to answering to people. I believe this one is about suicide and is about a girl/woman who feels she's had to answer to people all her life (parents, bosses, boyfriends, friends, etc) and has never been able to make her own decisions. she feels like she's never been able to take control of her life and hates the way it has turned out and hates herself for letting things end up this way. she feels that killing herself is the only way to end the pain and the only way to control her life is to end it.

Alkaline Trio – Another Innocent Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
ok i haven't really went through all 82 of these posts so forgive me if i'm repeating anything but this is how i explained this song to my friend when i emailed her about it 10 minutes ago.

"this is a really cool concept song. the first verse is kind of setting up a typical story about a guy who goes to the bar to drown his sorrow and sits at the bar telling his sob stories trying to be all deep and mysterious. the 2nd verse actually reveals him as a serial killer. pretending that he's not messed up in the head, pretending like he's just a normal guy. disguising himself both mentally and physically to not lead on any suspicion as he lures in another innocent girl with his act. making her feel sorry for him and he'll take her home for pitty sex and he'll kill her there.
then it goes on to say that "when we get home you'll see that this part of him is now part of me" and it's kind of up to the listener to determine whether or not the narrorator is talking about the act that he puts on or if the entire song is actually about himself, and he himself is also a killer."

so now for those who want to know where i got that from:

"he likes to pretend that he's all grown up, he wanted to grow up to be an actor but he never told anybody"

this is talking about how he had aspirations to be an actor but instead of doing it professionally he does it to serve his addiction. he pretends that he's all grown up, because he's pretending that he's an normal adult, one who should know better than to kill people.

the rest of the first verse is pretty much exactly what i said before.

2nd verse - "he likes to pretend that he's all sewn up, it makes for a much stronger case but there's blood underneath that skin that scars not so easy to erase"
means that he's pretending he's ok even though he's a serial killer, if he acted like a nutcase it would attract suspicion. the blood part is talking about DNA and how he might be able to change his appearance and maybe even burn off his finger prints but no matter what you always have the same DNA and it's something you can't change it will always identify you. also talking about the emotional scars he has and how he can "erase" them by pretending they're not there, but he can't change his DNA.

"he walks with a glass cane now he's careful when holding his body up straight, can't go outside anymore when it's raining, can't smash up that beautiful face" i think is talking about his current disguise and how he's gotta pretend like he's crippled so he's gotta be careful not to hold his body up straight because it will give him away. (if he really was crippled why would he use a glass cane? that's a hidden hint because if you actually needed a cane you wouldn't want one that would shatter on you) pretending he's crippled adds to the part of the plan wear he's looking for pity from women, he's making himself appear to be more nonthreatening so they are more willing to go home with him. "can't go outside anymore when it's raining, can't smash up that beautiful face" is talking about how he's gotta be careful not to blow his cover. i don't think it's supposed to be literal rain, or literal smashing. i think it's more about how when it's raining people are more careful, like when they are driving they need to be more careful and also when they are out in the rain people are more careful because they're trying to not get wet. the face smashing is pretty much about his disguise being ruined and for him to be found out for what he truly is. but a more literal interpretation would be that if he's wearing makeup as a disguise then he can't go out in the rain because the rain would ruin it.

the rest is pretty much self explanitory from what i wrote earlier. I hope this makes sense and of course i don't know for sure that that's what the song means as i'm not a mind reader. but if you think about it it makes sense and could even be based on true events (like "dead and broken" or "sadie")or something from a movie or TV. the great thing about alkaline trio is that they mask the meanings of their songs so well that they can be interpreted in different ways which is why i love them so much because they sing about a lot of stuff that everyone else sings about on the radio, but it's how they go about it that makes them so original.
