To be honest, I think it's about Mao Zedong, especially seeing as how the video is set in China. Here's my interpretation of the lyrics, looking at the Mao theory: "He’s a stranger to some And a vision to none He can never get enough, Get enough of the one" Mao was widely adored by people in his country, as in a "stranger" to them - he was a complete celebrity so his adorees never knew him. And "a vision to none" could be that now people don't see him in that way, so he is no longer a vision to them; or, in China he has left his mark, so even though he's dead he still leaves an impression. "He can never get enough of the one" is quite difficult...could "the one" be himself? "For a fortune he'd quit" Mao was always after riches and glory. "But it’s hard to admit How it ends and begins" Mao could never admit he was wrong, and a bad leader. "On his face is a map of the world (A map of the world) On his face is a map of the world (A map of the world)" Mao's actions were seen all over the world, by people everywhere; everyone sees the same thing on his face no matter where they look in their part of the world. "From yesterday, it’s coming! From yesterday, the fear!" Once again, the repeated mistakes Mao made came back to haunt him. Perhaps the fear of the Tibetan people coming back to bite him, to be crass, in the arse? His "empire" crumbling due to people world-wide seeing the way Tibetans are treated? From yesterday, it calls him But he doesn't want to read the message here" Mao repeatedly made the same mistakes - the sparrow campaign, increasing China's iron industry, all went down the pan due to his being completely ignorant. "He doesn't wanna read the message here" is that he refused to see that any of his country's problems were his fault. "On a mountain he sits, its not of gold but of shit Through the blood he can look, see the lives that he took" Mao had people murdered, his army of young people killed others who didn't follow Mao, even members of their own family - so "See the lives that he took" means how he indirectly murdered hundreds of thousands of people. "On a mountain..." is quite possibly how now he is not seen as a great leader, he is seen for how he truly was, and his mountain of gold has turned to nothing. Or maybe how he turned his golden country into quite literally, shit, during his reign. Also, the brutal treatment of Tibet could be incorporated here. "From a count to the one He'll decide when he's done with the innocent" The one-child policy, killing babies, brainwashing children etc. Kinda obvious. That's just my interpretation though ^_^ After all, the time this song was released was kinda when all the Tibet stuff was coming further out into the open, so it makes sense. |

edit: the "calling part", it just ocurred to me, is that he's trying to find his calling, which is her, he's just trying to find her again (when he's drunk and she's in hospital) and then when she's dead she's saying to him "I'm not calling" as in it's not me who's your calling, don't be looking for me, I'm dead and I'm gone and I don't want you looking for me (she doesn't want him to be totally broken by the fact that she's dead) there, I think I exhausted my interpreting abilities for today xD |

He woke up from dreaming and put on his shoes Started making his way past Two in the morning He hasn't been sober for days [the guy is possibly an alcoholic, or had a pretty wild night last night, and can't sleep, hence "making his way past two in the morning" - he's just wandering around in the middle of the night. maybe drinking because the girl's gone? explained later] Leaning now into the breeze Remembering Sunday, he falls to his knees They had breakfast together But two eggs don't last Like the feeling of what he needs ["leaning into the breeze" suggests to me he's being held up (as in carrying on in life) by means he has no idea of "the breeze" is invisible, is it not? or the girl held him up and now she's gone, the "feeling of what he needs" is her back] Now this place seems familiar to him She pulled on his hand with a devilish grin She led him upstairs She led him upstairs Left him dying to get in [he'd been in this kind of a relationship before "this place seemed familiar..." and obviously they're going to have sex. to be frank.] Forgive me, I'm trying to find my calling I'm calling at night [I think this is him remembering an argument they had "Forgive me", and his "calling" is just that he's lost in life.] I don't mean to be a bother But have you seen this girl? She's been running through my dreams And it's driving me crazy, it seems I'm gonna ask her to marry me [he really really loves her "marry me" and she's obviously gone missing, or run away, etc.] Even though she doesn't believe in love He's determined to call her bluff Who could deny these butterflies? They're filling his gut ["she doesn't believe in love" suggests that he's really in love with her, and she doesn't return it, especially when considering how in the first verse it's suggested that she's his rock in life. maybe this is his feelings as he builds up to asking her to marry him, from an outside party] Waking the neighbors, unfamiliar faces He pleads though he tries But he's only denied Now he's dying to get inside [she's in the hospital, evidently. and he's drunk, because she disappeared, i think to kill herself. "but he's only denied" and the previous lines suggest that he's drunk and so isn't allowed into the hospital to see her] Forgive me, I'm trying to find my calling I'm calling at night I don't mean to be a bother But have you seen this girl? She's been running through my dreams And it's driving me crazy, it seems I'm gonna ask her to marry me [same as before, him just replaying this in his head] The neighbors said she moved away [she moved out and away from him but he still followed her because he loved her, hence her disappearing/running away and killing herself] Funny how it rained all day I didn't think much of it then But it's starting to all make sense [all the things she hinted at to him are making him realise what has happened, hence him running to the hospital, drunk, to see her] Oh, I can see now that all of these clouds Are following me in my desperate endeavor To find my whoever, wherever she may be [he's constantly shadowed and not allowed to find "The One", he thought this girl was that person but she isn't. because the pace of the song changes here, I think maybe this is the part where she dies. maybe not, though] I'm not coming back [what she said in an argument with him before she left] (Forgive me) [what she wants to say, but can't, because she's dead] I've done something so terrible I'm terrified to speak [him in this "argument", because he's been drinking again, he has hit her because he's drunk and annoyed with her wanting to be away from him. she's "terrified to speak" and so is he.] (I'm not calling, I'm not calling) [once again what she wants to say, saying that she isn't going to call out for him anymore] But you'd expect that from me [he's saying she'd expect him to be like this, all drunk, so why is she acting surprised] I'm mixed up, I'll be blunt [both of them shouting this at each other? it seems like it] (You're driving me crazy) [same as above?] Now the rain is just washing you out of my hair [I think this is him outside after she's died, his "clouds" that follow him have burst and the rain seems like it's washing her away from him. especially as it's "funny how it rained all day" when she left. rain to him is synonymous (sp) with her leaving him] And out of my mind Keeping an eye on the world From so many thousands of feet off the ground I'm over you now I'm at home in the clouds, towering over your head [this is her from "heaven", she's finally free "in the clouds", think of birds and freedom, from the relationship she didn't want to be in, where he was drunk, and violent as mentioned before] I guess I'll go home now I guess I'll go home now I guess I'll go home now I guess I'll go home [he is resolved to the fact that she is gone and so goes home, broken. he has nothing else to do other than to go home, maybe "at home in the clouds" because he has nothing else to live for] that's what I got from it :) |
