The Shins – A Comet Appears Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the second to last stanza ("But with each turn...to make sinking stones fly") He's talking about the things we try to base our lives on, things we convince ourselves can give meaning to our existence. The most obvious example of this is religion of course; people cling to religion as a way to make themselves feel significant, like their lives mean more than it seems. This could be anything else though - I mean, some relationship we feel gives meaning to our existence would be just the same. Each time you inevitably realize the truth even if you can't bring yourself to admit it.
I also can relate to the growing numbness in your heart. When you face disappointment again and again it becomes hard to let yourself have faith anymore, to let yourself feel, even if you desperately want to. I've always felt that its best to just let yourself feel fully everything that comes but no matter how much I wish I could, I end up closing myself off from it and ignoring the pain. How inarticulate I am right now...well if anyone understands what I'm saying then this is what I think the chorus is talking about. Of course, I could just be reading my own life into things. Tends to happen.

Bright Eyes – At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics 17 years ago
I really think this song is intended to be ironic. I mean, the story would generally be taken as extraordinarily sad. From facing the facts of one's own worthlessness to lack of identity to death. However, the tone of the song is obviously upbeat and encouraging. I think the contradiction really just illustrates the stupidity and ridiculousness of our optimism. Those of you who have read Voltaire's Candide probably can relate the two: both using dark language to exemplify the absurdity of optimism.
