Being a poet myself and having studied poetry and writing, songs are poetry in motion which means that the images in song lyrics are symbolic.... To interpret this song you have to break it down simply because this is a two part story. "I wear my sunglasses at night So I can so I can Watch you live and breathe your storylines " The guy in the song is not referring to wearing actual sunglasses, he's saying that he is spiritualty intuns with his own instincts and he's able to recieve and send emotions, images and visions to someone (female) that he has a strong emotional bond with, that he's watching her live and breathe her part in life. He's hiding in the shadows, mysterously watching and he's aware of her exstance. "(And) I wear my sunglasses at night So I can so I can Keep track of the visions in my eyes" He's keeping track of emotions, thoughts, insights, images, memories, and words, he's analying and calucating, and sorting through these things. "While she's deceiving me It cuts my security (has) She got control of me I turn to her and say " He's aware that this women is misleading him, and he's aware of it, but her control over him, the fact that he can't stop thinking about her has separated him from everything that kept him grounded. and so he's warning her.. 'Don't switch the blade on the guy in shades, oh no Don't masquerade with the guy in shades, oh no I can't believe it You got it made with the guy in shades, oh no ' Not to stab him in the back, Not to put on a deceptive appearance around him, That she has everything she ever wanted from him, his heart, soul, love, protection, etc "(And) I wear my sunglasses at night So I can so I can Forget my name while you collect your claim " Again he's using his insight to tune into her, he's visualizing her, feeling her, escaping reality through her, and forgetting who he is, so she can recover control over what she feels is her's. "And I wear my sunglasses at night So I can so I can See the light that's right before my eyes " Again he's tuned in and he's aware of what he considers pure and true. A type of Spiritual awareness; illumination, or clarity of preception. Don't switch the blade on the guy in shades, oh no Don't masquerade with the guy in shades, oh no I can't believe it! Don't be afraid of the guy in shades, oh no It can't escape you 'Cause you got it made with the guy in shades, oh no Again he's aware that she's decieving him, but she has control over him and he's being seperated from all that keeps him secure. But as long as she don't betray him, or pretend she is someone she's not around him. She has no reason to be afraid of him, he won't break loose from her confinement; she has his heart, soul, love , protection, etc. |

This song is connected to 'Going under' and the abuse she took, sleep and imagination is how she escaped her reality. I can relate to this inner world she created, I too was a victim of an abusive husband, and even now that I had escaped it, I still rely on dreams and my imagination to weave stories (paint pictures of my beliefs and exp's) Upon my escape from hell, I found who I truly was; I am a writer. This song is about breaking free from someone who is controlling, abusive in nature. She feels that she is drowning in him, and cannot breath, and if she saves herself, she'll spiritually awaken herself - realize her own self worth.... I sometimes wonder when I listen to this song and 'Wake me up' if they are connected. Maybe after she left this controlling person who could of been a family member/husband/boyfriend - if she met someone else who awoke her spirit (inspired her to live) since tourniquet is about suicide and a plead for redemption.... |
