Correct me if I'm wrong, but the part where Anthony sings: Alone inside my forest room and it�s stormy I never thought I�d be in bloom But this is where I start I think it's a reference to Kurt Cobain, or at least Nirvana. I know he had immense respect for the band, and even more for Cobain himself. He also mentions Kurt in Californication and actually wrote about his suicide in Tearjerker. I'm not sure what the song "In Bloom" is about (...yet) so I can't say WHY he added this in the song, but I'm sure it's a nod to KC. |

In fact, I wouldn't even be surprised that the government would themselves call back later to say "I did it! It was a hoax" and con everyone into believing it wasn't real... or maybe it WAS a hoax. Who knows. The point is, no matter what they say, keep an open mind about everything, and I think Tool would agree. |

I get what you mean and I really can relate. However, it's still somewhat important to try and decifer what an artist is trying to get across. Not saying for ALL the songs, but at least some. See, I feel that every song has a unique message which is personal to everyone. Hence, relating to a song. However, songs like Lateralus, Parabola or Third Eye have, imo, a clear cut message that I think is worth looking in to. And even if we'll never completely understand what Maynard was trying to say (and, like you said, he probably doesn't fully "get it" either), it's still a good thinking exercise. Heck, it might even open some people's eyes to new things. So I think it's still important to try and decifer songs... just don't overdo it. |

Tool is by far the most ingenious band that has ever walked the Earth, imo, with Led Zeppelin coming in close 2nd (because if you look closely, many of THEIR lyrics have deep double meanings too). I thank the universe every day for letting us five into the power it holds through these guys... and I'm not talking about Maynard, I'm talking about the whole band. The purity and genious of it all doesn't express itself solely through the lyrics, but through the music too. Thanks a million to these guys. |

| The lyrics posted by "trainsvsabus" are the right ones. I think it's about him feeling guilty about having an abortion (or his girlfriend having an abortion). Guilty not only because of killing the baby, but also for the death benefitting him. It's an amazing song. | |

What's so amazing about this song is that, at least to me, it defines Kurt Cobain's last few years with us. Just trying to find something to fill the void inside of him and finding nothing. I though maybe once he had had his daughter things would start turning around for him but I guess it justgoes to show that sometimes no matter what you do or try, that void never goes away. It's sad, but poetically tragic. To me, this song let's me dive into his head before he took his life. Of course I know I'll never know until I come face to face with my own cold, dead face, but it's still as close as I can get. RIP Kurt. This song was meant for you. |

I think the video of the song is pretty self explanatory to what the song means. It's about Corporations (Wal-Mart) buying cheap and selling high. About american companys going around child labor laws or even normal labor laws just so they can save a buck or two per product made. The government, the media, the people constantly say we live in a free country, but that's only what they tell us to keep us blindly and ignorantly happy. We're not free! Hell we're barely a democracy! Things have to change! We obviously can't rely on our leaders anymore cuz they seem to be ok with the fact that we're stealing other people's own lives and libertys. It's up to us the people to do something about it. I for one don't shop at Wal-Mart, Zellers, Sears or any other huge corporation focused solely on money over human life. Once I'm older and a little more financially prosperous (cuz I can't do much with 700$ in my bank account), I'll do whatever I can to change things! And I think the purpose of this song is to open people's eyes to what's really going on. God Bless America? No, God Bless Rise Against! |

This song is smarter than just Rise Against are angry towards artists writing poor songs or actors talking about the environment and not actually doing anything... This song is talking about the hollywood entertainment industry that has us wrapped around its little finger. "All we are is entertainment caught up in our own derangements Tell us what to say and what to do." --> This part here is saying how we've become too caught up in the entertainment industry. We've stopped thinking for ourselves and now we're trying to be like what we see... We're trying to become entertainment (Trying to look like an actress or a singer, etc.) "All we are are pretty faces, picture perfect, bottled rage. Packaged synthesized versions of you!" --> This is sort of a follow up to what I said. Entertainment cares about 2 things, its image and making money. Entertainment has to look good, even if it means replacing every part of your body with artificial substances and limbs (so to speak). We all want to look like a rock star, or a model.. so we change everything about ourselves to become this. "They all scream California and its toppling empire, but can't you see the end is coming soon?" --> We all scream for California, in the sense that we all want to be what California is. We all want to be like the people we see on TV, we all want to become them. and when he says "And its toppling empire" I believe that pretty much speaks for itself. Cali has become an empire of its own and its toppling over us... nowhere in the world can you get away from it. The Hollywoodian industry is everywhere! The entire second verse is just completely destroying the Hollywood scene and what its appearance. Just saying, again, that it's trying to preserve an image of falseness and insecurity hidden behind pride. To me, it's more than just an angry hate song towards artists and actors. It's a song about how we have to snap out of this charade! We have to disconnect ourselves from these projections. It's insane (when you think about it, injecting yourslef with botox, which is a poison, to have tighter looking skin is pretty fucked up!), it's immoral and it's killing us. It's killing who we are as human beings. It's unhealthy, degrading and embarassing. That's my opinion, but I really think he's voicing a call to the californian empire that has become too big... too important in our lives... it has become an unhealthy role model and even more, it's portraying a false sense of reality. It's ubstructing our view on the rest of the world, on more important things happening. lol sorry if this is long, but it's harder to explain than it looks :) |

How is this a bad thing? Ok, maybe there aren't 100,000 ways of interpreting these lyrics, but it's still an incredibly intelligent song just the same. How many artists have called out on the californian empire and calling describing what it actually is to people who can't see it? The lyrics are a 11/10, the song itself is a 9/10 (to me at least). The way the lyrics are written, you can tell they didn't write this in 20 minutes... The way they use the circus music during the bridge just before the chorus. It's an amazing song even if you can't interpret it the way you want. To me, this is one of the best songs (lyrically) that Rise Against has ever made. It's just too perfect! |

I have to agree with both Rutlin and Lutherius. I think this song talks about how we complain about things when in reality, soooo many people have it WAY worse than us. However, Lutherius also brings up a good point in saying that it's about worldly situations and what we're doing to try to fix things. This song is REALLY open to interpretation. Great song, though. Very meaningful to everyone! |

What he says is intelligent, the lyrics are almost drawn to perfection but it's really the emotion in his voice when he sings it. Almost in an utter anger/realization but all in a positive aspect... lol I can't explain it better than that! |

Here's exactly what it means. I'm 100% sure that 90% of this is correct. The first verse talks about sweatshops (obviously): The complete first verse from "To the sound of a heartbeat pounding away" to "We toss and turn but don't sleep" is from the victim's point of view, but quickly turns to "Each Breath we take makes us thieves." Which is saying that we all know what's going on but do fuck all to change things. Then we have "Just talk but promise nothing else" talking about how politicians keep saying we need to change things and that they're against child labor but in the end, they don't do anything to change things. The Chorus is all from the Laborer's point of view. "Under this sky no longer blue" in this case is about the fact that laborers never see the blue sky because they get up before dawn and leave after dusk. Verse 2, I believe, talks about War ("To the sound of a time bomb ticking away"). "To the blare of the sirens combing the streets" could either be the town blowing its 'Mayday!' horn to evacuate the town or Ambulance and Fire-engine sirens blaring to help out. "Chased down like dogs, we run from your grasp until the sun comes up" would be the innocent people trying to run away from the grasps of death surrounding them in the war-torn cities. In the chorus, when they say "Under this sky no longer blue" is saying that amidst the war, the skies are always lit up by bombs exploding and bullets flying. That's what I got from it. It's a very powerful song. To everyone that dislikes this song due to the fact they feel it's too mainstream or that RA are sell-outs... tell yourself that at least they're singing about stuff that matters and at least they're TRYING to make a difference! They seak change more than money, I'm quite sure! |
