Actually, I just checked, they lived in Bethany, which is about 12 miles from the Dead Sea. So not too close...but still, the rest seems to fit. |

I think that is song is about the sisters Mary and Martha from the bible. Sam Beam is not a Christian but he writes a lot of songs about Christianity as though they are folk tales, as he is a folk singer. But according to the story, Jesus goes to visit the two sisters Martha and Mary, and while he is there, Martha is "distracted by her many tasks" (changing the locks on the door) and Mary just sits at Jesus' feet and listens (is lain on the floor). Also in the story, Martha complains to Jesus that her sister has left her to do all the work (explaining why they are called "jealous"). However, I don't know if they lived by the sea, because the story just says "a certain village." So if this is really what it is about, then the song is being sung from Jesus' point of view. I think the rest of the lyrics could fit with this. |
