'Carved my name into his leather seats' is the one time the lyrics screw up a little. Not because they don't sound good in the song, but that's where this lawsuit idea people have is valid. If she carved something else into his leather seat, the premise of the song would be more realistic and she could plausibly get away with it. Still a very fun song, and some people may be crazy enough to do it for real when they see red, even if they know they'd be charged. |

Obviously it's about separated lovers. The lyrics sound a little bitter, as if the narrator doesn't quite want their lover to have as good a time on their own as if they were together, but I think the lover left behind is that sad that they'll be left on their own, and this would probably just be inner dialogue. On the outside, they probably wouldn't say 'I'll be lonely, and I hope you'll be lonely without me' lol. If the lonely thing was said to the departing lover's face, it would probably be referring to being romantically and sexually lonely (ie. be faithful to me while we're apart), probably not emotional loneliness. It's quite a lyrically honest way of looking at the situation in my opinion. This isn't about a man controlling a woman or anything either, because this song is decades old, and both genders have recorded versions. |

I think the narrator became too career-focused and neglected her relationship with a guy. Her partner didn't cheat on her I don't think (otherwise the song wouldn't have such an apologetic tone) but he did become tired of her not being there and broke it off with her, moving onto someone who treated him better. This song is basically her apologizing for her part in the break-up and asking him to remember the good times rather than the bad. |

| This looks to me like it's about a guy who married a woman named Chloe who he loves, but more as a friend (perhaps she's a childhood friend who's always been there for him) but is but is gay and has affairs with other men. | |

I love this song. I think it's the most underrated of his catalogue (and there are many underrated ones). I think it's about how he's in love with a person with who hasn't really committed only to him. But he faithfully waits for this person to realize that there's nobody who they'll find that loves them more than Elton ("your gypsy heart will never find any arms as warm as mine"). |
