I heard Ben Gibbard introduce this song on Sirius Alt Nation. He said that he wrote this song after attending an event with "someone who is really well known by the public". Basically he said that he was at this event and was getting tired of hearing these celeberties say "Oh have you met this person? He is my best friend in the world but he's also my assistant." and he found it to be such an ironic thing to claim, so thats how he came about this song that is ultimately about friendships that actually have more foundation to it (jobs) rather than just the sake of being friends. The person they see to be their best friend is also on their pay roll, which is how the opening line "You'll never have to hear theword "no" If you keep all your friends on the payroll" came to be. |

Great song. I kind of view the meaning of this song to be pretty straight forward. The first verse talks about the narrator/singer being a ticket taker for a boat (or Ark ?). He essentially admits that he can not afford a ticket himself for the ride but instead can just dream about it as he counts the passers by. The chorus makes me think that he once had a love interest (Mary Anne) who boarded the ship. He knows he doesn't have much of chance with her, but he has some hope that she will choose to stay with him rather than board the ark. Being a "gambling man" he decides to wait for her as she does leave. He also talks about how he is prepared to spend the rest of his life protecting and taking care of Mary Anne (has weapons, oil, gold), should she ever decide to return from her trip back to him. |

| This song is based on the old Hymn Roll Jordan. I think it speaks pretty well for itself and is about Slavery. The title "The Northern" can refer to how Cananda and up north is were there was no slavery. Alexisonfire is a canadian band and it would make good sense. As for Their own religous veiws, who knows. This will be the next single from the album. Amazing song. 10/10 | |

For the people who wonder about the "left side" thing and how the left side is the womans side, well thats easy. Its an old gentleman thing for a woman to always walk on the left side of a man. Especially on a road cause then the woman is inside and safe. For example, they are walking and if passing car was to go by and spray water or something, it would hit the man and not the woman. Get it? It may also refer to the heart on the left side. |

I love this song. I heard somewhere that "Casey" is actually the name of his guitar. Which makes sense cause this song has a incredible guitar tune/riff. So thats where the "Casey's Song" comes in. As for the meaning, star up in the sky is spot on. |
