as far as "Doll Steak" and "Test Meat" are concerned...
this is just my personal interpretation but after reading people's comment's about death, reincarnation, spirits (ecto-plasm)and suicide i thought of the following:
Doll Steak and Test Meat are similar...they are refering to his physical form and their insignificance compared to his mind and thoughts and soul for lack of a better term...think of a doll: lifeless object imitating a living thing. he's saying his physical form is nothing more than a doll made of meat...and test meat is comparable...think of a test dummy...he's talking about his/our physical forms...we are just 'doll steaks' and 'test meat' as living people until we die...our physical form is just what is in between being born and reaching the afterlife |

I listened to this CD a lot when I was really young and I think it was for the better because this song in particular gave me real perspective on music and what music could be and I think that this is one of those songs that made me a better musician, creatively speaking. I'd like to know what this song is really about. I don't know.

MY ANSWER IS RIGHT....maybe not but now you will read on....
i think its about how he feels toward his own music...he thinks the only way hes going to be successfull is if he keeps making funny, weird songs rather than serious 'songwriter songs'. This is why he's afraid that he may fall back on the abstract...he thinks his fall back are his goofy songs and that he may not make it with his more serious writing, which is showcased heavily in white pepper. this also ties into lets begin with the past in front...the past being when most of their abstract, early stuff was made. hes all staged and its all an act...its a cry to people that he wants to be able to get away with writing a normal, pretty song. and White Pepper is arguably they're most normal sounding album filled with Beatles-esque songs- think about it...its weens beatles albums....THE WHITE ALBUM + SGT. I think everyone is overlooking it...its simply trying to put a situation or image lyrically with an appropriate song style...they are obviously doing a parody of adult contemporary music but now they are the adults going to what seemed to me like 'wine and cheese' type of partys...if they had to write an adult contemporary song what would it be about to fit the mood....a classy adult party with 'tri colored pastas...served on platters of the purest gold'....not sure where swingers tie in you dirty people |
