After reading nervas' comment about the on-again-off-again relationship, and hearing the line "Braid your hair like a sister, or maim you like a hurricane", the line about the postman means this to me: Oberst is trying to get his message across to this girl, but this metaphorical postman just won't deliver it. And the get-well-cards kind of represent good intentions and she's just not getting those. You know? And I read the stupid argument about "maim or name" and I choose to blieve that it's "maim" because that makes more sense to me. He either wants to be as kind and gentle as a sister braiding hair, or fuck shit up like a hurricane. |
