What I prescribe is by no means cannon, but perhaps the song encompasses the forced degeneration of innocence; perhaps it's humanity that hinders the innocent's understanding of God. It doesn't matter how it got that way, it just is what it is. I think the boy may offer a symbol of retention whereas the girl one of termination. The boy and the girl are collectively offered tribulations; the boy contingently survives his whereas the converse occurs in relation to the girl. The lyrics present a recursive hopelessness; though the boy is yet innocent, he is verily burdened by the prospect of failure. Near the end the boy travels to a town and impels witness to the perdition we construct. Through all of this, God transcendentally keeps the ball rolling. Day in and day out we find ourselves in a circular rut damning our feet for leading us to where we guide them; who are we really to blame? I believe the song portrays the existence of God the same as humanity; it questions the significance of ontology. |
