| Steely Dan – Only A Fool Would Say That Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Bob Dylan is famous for performing while wearing a white Stetson hat like that mentioned in the first verse. Also, the line "Imagine your face". That always struck me as the kind of thing used as a childish insult. "Imagine...your face!" Something like that. Also, "talking bout a world where all was free." Communists? |

| Sara Bareilles – Gravity Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I truly enjoy all of the comments on here. However, I'm going to end some of your fun, and explain what she was trying to express. In her first Unplugged performance (the one she did with MTV - raw, and really great: look it up), she did this tune last, and just before she started, leaned into the microphone and said this: "I wrote this song after having my first real relationship, and having my heart brutally broken." It kind of explains the fact that she was really into this guy, but he ended it, and she is totally infatuated with him without him even trying. His 'gravity' is holding her from finally breaking away the way he wants her to. |

| Sara Bareilles – Bottle It Up Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| If you saw the video, you'll see that every shot has somebody playing a piano. She says that it represents the fact that music is always in your life, and I think that's what this represents - a male pop artist who sold out a tune that "girls around the nation" will love for baring his heart to them. But she wants him to 'bottle it up' and hold back from taking away from his true musicality and restricting his love to those who understand what he's trying to express, and merely allow anyone who seems to understand him as a person into his life. | |
| Sara Bareilles – Love Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I definitely love the fact that the song was written as a complaint to her label. But the free download was just her pure, harsh "fuck you." Between September and July, though, she added the bridge section (Promise me / That you'll leave the light on...), which I felt was a little bit of 'giving in' to her label's desire for a true love song. | |
| Sara Bareilles – Fairytale Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| There's an aspect of musical meaning as well. As she mocks these fantasies that girls have come to accept as the facts of reality, she plays out a jazz/doo-wop part that might represents her clinging to the past anyway, and her refusal to release what she has been forced to accept is no longer the truth. | |
| Smash Mouth – All Star Lyrics | 17 years ago |

A quick point: this was the selling track on their debut album, Astro Lounge. NOT Walkin' On The Sun. "All that glitters is gold" existed far before Led Zepellin picked it up and put it in Stairway. The idea of subliminal protest is perfected in this song. Though Bob Dylan always referred to protest songs as being "whiny," this song manages to get the band's point across without sounding like they are complaining. This is something very rare in tunes, and something Dylan was never able to grasp - such is why The Times They Are A-Changin' sounds blatant and whiny. Instead, Smash Mouth has the potential and the capability to carry the tune - even make it popular! - and make their point to those who care to listen. A catchy song, nonetheless, but the idea is important. They were talking about global warming, rising gas prices... the album was released in '99, before almost anyone was paying attention to any of it! All in all, one of the best tunes I've ever heard. Period. |

| Barenaked Ladies – Shoebox Lyrics | 17 years ago |

A couple of quick tidbits I have discovered regarding this song. First, I found the original video on YouTube. In the video, the speaker is a high school girl having an affair with an older businessman, and the affair is eventually discovered by her mother somewhere around the instrumental break. Second, the creation of this song has a curious story behind it. Originally, the purpose of the song was to fulfill a goal for their own amusement. They merely wanted a song where they could manipulate a vowel in the chorus: "My shoe box of li-e-i-e-i-e-ies." |
