I have always thought this song is about a man who's charged and (morally) tried for being unfaithful to his lover. As he involves himself in this moral struggle, he assumes the role of a man who's being unfairly charged: "here on the stand with the book in my hand. And truth on my side". As he engages more in this moral strife, he assumes a very victimized and dignified position, so BEFORE defending himself, he asks for his sentence: "Hand me my sentence. I'll show no repentance. I'll suffer with pride". Then, AFTER accepting his sentence, he defends himself, arguing some sort of "innocent manhood purity", which justifies his unfaithfulness. "Because my duty was always to beauty. And that was my crime. ... If you see purity as immaturity. Well it's no surprise". But then, at the end, the accused gives this moral confrontation a dramatic turn over: he shows he was not really feeling victimized and unfairly charged. He was actually being brazen, cheeky and shameless -very usual on Depeche's lyrics-. So, he tells his lover/accuser/judge that he feels "elation, high" to know he can trust this fix of injustice "time after time". More over, at the very end he even gets offensive and asks her to "open her eyes", like asking her not to be stupid, and stop fooling herself. |

| Zoe – Reptilectric Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Indescriptible!!! |

A friend of mine told me she thinks it's a song about anilingus: "Think of ice cream sliding into a crack [...] Suck mud and make a deal for that taste [...] Don't let your life be the butt of a joke", etc. I still think it's more about heroine. |

I think "Alice" is just anther name for heroine: "The heat sticks to summer's heavy sweat Hang around it'll get hotter yet You got the shakes and it's gonne get worse Don't you know it's all a part of the curse She's got the hit that takes you into space Suck mud and make a deal for that taste You got nothing but you're riding on a star You couldn't guess that she could take you that far" |

I think the song is about the singer watching his girlfriend trying to quit on drugs, but she is very deep (in drugs) and it's hard for fim since he loves her and can't stand to watch her suffering. So, he gives her an (ill-) advice to give up on her rehab, and come back to drugs (and friends): "So turn around and run back where you're from ... You can't get on" [...] "Just keep it hid" |

| Don Henley – The End of the Innocence Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I definitely think it has something to do with political issues, meaning how when we get into adulthood we grow dissapointed abaout politics and all the lies that support America's greatness. It specially draws my attention the part that says "we were poisoned by these firy tales" I think it actually refers to JFK and his "Camelot" mystique. | |
