Elliott Smith – No Name #4 Lyrics 16 years ago
when i hear this song i picture him and his mom packing up there things and planning their escape, but the music makes it sounds almost like an adventure, like this special exciting moment between him and his mom when they finally get away from I guess Charlie? It seems like he became alot closer with his mom during this episode, sifting through her bag finding photos of her as a kid, i think maybe why elliott recalled this memory in a song is because through all the turmoil of his past there were probably really special moments like this that could only be produced in a scenario like the on elliott was living in, it's really cool and really intimate, gotta love elliott mannnnnn

Elliott Smith – No Name #1 Lyrics 17 years ago

The chord arrangement reminds me of the kind of song you might hear at a 1950's highschool dance. However, the delicate understated strumming of the guitar combined with the pitch bends in the melody submerges an otherwise pleasant social event into this uncomfortable, disorienting, somewhat nauseating atmosphere. When the ride cymbal starts playing after the first bar with the snare, it sounds alot like the chatter and movement of a crowd of people talking amongst eachother.

At a party he was waiting
Looking kind of spooky and withdrawn
Like he could be underwater...

If you've ever shown up to a dance, party, or any kind of festive social gathering feeling uncomfortable, out-of-place, unsure about what to do or who to talk to, or that you simply did not belong there in the first place, this song could take you back there. It doesn't really sound like a place you'd want to return to, but there's a certain pleasure taken when you listen to this song. It has such an endearing quality to it and makes you love the outsider and empathize with him.

Go home
and live with your pain.

And if it's you whose the outsider, it could make you love and empathize with yourself.

Nick Drake – I Was Made to Love Magic Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah I was suprised when no one commented on this either. It's a really beautiful and sad song.

I think it's about a very lonley isolated depressed guy, much like Nick Drake, who seems to think he'll spend the rest of his life living in isolation. Hence,

"I was born to love no one
No one to love me"

And his only companion in life is the beauty he finds in simple things, much like mParanoia pointed out.

"No one to love me
Only the wind in the long green grass
The frost in a broken tree."

This first stanza is very beautiful, and has a extremely endearing quality to it. I feel that there are many people who feel lost in the world and alone and find solace and comfort in simple beautiful things, perhaps painting or writing music like Nick Drake did. This is at least how I relate to it. I feel like somewhat of a loner myself and my solace is playing guitar, and sometimes I myself feel like there was no one made to love me and that I was born only to love the magic of playing to oneself in isolation.

"I was made to love magic
All its wonder to know
But you all lost that magic
Many many years ago."

I think Nick Drake feels that this "magic" is something we experience very intensly during youth, but we slowly loose sight of it when we get older. And perhaps the only ones who carry it with them throughout their life drive themselves into isolation.

Very sad, very endearing, and very beautiful song. I might just learn this one on guitar.
