This is the first song I heard by Interpol. I heard it years ago when the album came out. It blew me away and I fell in love with the album. I had a lot of personal connection at the time with things going on in my life, and that probably made it all the more endearing. This song and the album very much led me to be interested in much of the music I listen to now. I've been interested in screenplay for some time now, and this song alone gave me the seed for an entire story. As some have said, the intensity picks up as the song progresses, likely mirroring the relationship falling apart. To me, the song starts off with the girl wanting the narrator for a relationship at her convenience (or vice versa) and he's putting up with it hoping that she'll change eventually and he's willing to stick it out until then (settling down it takes time; one day we'll live together; and life will be better; I have it here yeah in my mind) because he's in love with her. He thinks he can't totally let her in emotionally, but realizes that's not true (I can't pretend; I don't need to defend; some part of me from you). The end of the song (You're looking alright tonight; I think we should go) makes me think that he has given up his illusion of how the relationship will progress and how he wants it to be, and he's accepting the shallow insincerity. |

Amazing. I thought this was a website to talk about what songs mean, hence the title of the site. Six posts prior to mine, not one with any talk of lyrical meaning. That said, here's what I think. It seems to be regarding a relationship where things aren't great. Maybe some cheating was involved. One party is into it but something happened and that person is questioning what the other thinks about the other's commitment. |
