Cocker's lyrics often singe with unrequited love and impotent rage. The whole song seems to be a vengeful rant about the pleasure he takes in seeing an ex-girlfriend's downfall because of her decadent lifestyle. There is intensely bitter and judgmental tone that runs through the entire song, which only shows us the depth of his entanglement. There also seems to be a certain self-awareness, with Cocker almost mocking this jilted lover by the extremity of his rancour. He's skirted similar themes in songs like: Disco 2000 and Bad Cover Version. |
