Before i begin when i say conscience i don't mean it in those terms i mean an inner voice. but it can still be interchangeable. I think that this song is talking about a one night stand, about a woman that takes a man home. ANd this man's life is one that has been very unsettling, he has no roots(indicated by :I wake alone In a woman's room I hardly know I wake alone Pretend that I am finally home) obviously the woman has gone to work and has left the man at home in bed, and it is there the man stays and wishes that he doesn't go anywhere becuse he desires to have security and stableness(indicated by:And I can hardly get myself out of this bed For fear of never lying in this bed again Oh Christ, I'm not that desperate Oh no, oh God, I am ) Then in the next paragraph he is talking to himself to his conscience. His conscience is asking the questions and e is answering them. ANd then his conscience asks a question that he has asked himslef so many times before and probably by others or from those to whom have played a big part in his life and he then gets defensive, and tells his conscience to stop his inner self to stop because it is putting him down, putting down his ego, that he apparently needed to build up and he thought that he could do so by sleeping whit this woman. and then finally he comes back with a reply to his conscience saying that he doesn't want to finish anything any more and that maybe he can settle things with himslef and his past by being with this girl even though thta is not what his life is like. And then the web perhaps represents a steady relationship it represnts the woman becoming attached to the man and so she gets atttached to him and perhaps the man's inclination to hwat he is used to, against his will and her biting down would mean that he being in this relationship means that his old way of life is over it is dead and it stops the questions that his conscience asks him that plagues him so and then the rest of the song just him telling himself trying to convince himslef that he is home when really that is not how he feels but trying to tell himself, ya know the old saying if you are told something enough times you'll believe it. But those lyrics are also contrasted to what is really happening, he being in a web, him not getting what he really wnats. And his inner voice is probably telling that to him over and over again |
