everybody and their dog knows this song is about weed, any theories about murder/rape are just a little bit out there if you ask me. As someone already pointed out, this is Tom Petty we're talking about. |

definitely sounds like heroin, considering most of the other suggestions (weed, LSD) are non-addictive, and the line "now I'm a slave to this black drug" is clearly talking about dependency. |

yeah i kinda get a post-911 vibe from this. The first verse definitely depicts some sort of tragedy turned spectacle, and I feel like the rest of the song kind of deals with the fallout (poverty, homelessness maybe?), and then goes on to talk about the future (being underground as a possible example). |

Embers and Envelopes has a reference to God in it. Some members of the band are Christians. They're on a Christian label.
You can take the meaning however you want to, but it was probably written to God. |

if you listened to Say Anything at all you'd probably be able to guess that most of those overly-cliche lyrics are in a sarcastic manner. He may be parodying other "sappy" love songs, while still expressing his true emotions, just in a cliche and contrived way.
Or who knows, maybe he's being honest and that's how he really feels, you can't knock a guy for being honest. Unless you're a douche. |

I understand the relationship correlation that people are making, but this could simply just be about another man. There's really no way of telling, but I think the meaning of the song (whether addressed to a man or woman) is pretty self-explanatory otherwise. |

these dudes make some rad music but their message just comes across as preachy. I'm all for Christian artists but their songs don't really have much purpose other than to say God rocks.
It's who they are and respect it, but it's hard to get into. Luckily you can't understand the lyrics very well ;) |

Sad to see that nobody had the lyrics to this.
To me, this song represents a relationship (or lack thereof) between father and son, and the impact that has on future generations. The lack of relationship is passed on through the family. |
