'oh, that wasn't what I meant to say at all' a line inspired by t.s.eliots j.alfred prufrock perhaps...? Maybe theres a shared theme of being spiritually exhausted. |

To me this song is sort of a contrast to all those stereotypical songs about feeling unloved or wanting love from someone. It shows how cold and melancholy it is to be on the otherside, to be in a relationship but know you don't feel anything for the partner and are just waiting for the right time to end it. By saying that she can't help if they're 'going abroad' shows that she doesn't want to commit. But she'll carry on pretending to seemingly prolong the hurt she'll cause, 'ill call you baby i will and i do'. |

I don't think hes neccesarily saying he 'wants' a hook up - its more ironic in the sense hes resentful from being used as a rebound and hes accepting his status. Nobody likes 'old sardine' or 'bacon rind', they're more like bitter sarcastic comebacks I think. At first it seems to apply that he was the type to just have meaningless encounters rather than the full mean - but then the 'walk a mile just to catch a smile from a fish without its brine' maybe shows that he was more obsessive and wanted this girl more than originally expected. |
