Morrissey – Irish Blood, English Heart Lyrics 17 years ago
The problem with insisting on holding we brits accountable for the sins of our fathers is that, if you're american, te chances are you're descended from one lot of imperialists or another. Even if you identify with the peoples of a formerly subjugated nature, the likelihood is that there's a bit of the oppressors' DNA kicking about in your genome. However hard you dissaciate yourself from Bush and Reagan's neocolonialism, or Clinton's pontiud pilate act, if you're human, it's fair to say your descended from at least one person who's behaviour you'd rather not acknowledge. But as long as you're not actively invading other countries, no one should hold it against you.

Billy Bragg – Brickbat Lyrics 17 years ago
Just reading these lyrics and I welled up. I've found his last three albums disappointing and was wondering if a happy domestic life had sapped his facility as a lyricist. Realising that fatherhood inspired him to come up with something as beautiful as this gives me hope that he's got another great album in him yet.

Billy Bragg – Northern Industrial Town Lyrics 17 years ago
Gasp! at the twist in the tale. The moment when Bragg turned his back on being the greatest songwriter of his generation and decided to become a mildly embarassing ID card apologist.

The Beatles – Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, there are obvious parallels between Lennon and George Costanza in this one. It's a sort of 60s equivalent of George being invited up for coffee and refusing because he doesn't srink the stuff.

Here Lennon is basically on a promise, but completely unreceptive to a series of obvious cues. When the belated realisation hit George, we got typical Costanzaesque anguish. Lennon obviously opted for a spot of arson instead, but they're both examples of typical subclinical male autism.
