I find it interesting that people so often lump the Cure and the Smiths together. I think Robert Smith once said something like "If Morrissey tells me Meat is Murder then I'll go and eat meat because I fucking hate Morrissey so much." But then again maybe it's like lumping Oasis and Blur together. Back to this song. I believe this song is almost entirely literal. Put it in the context of someone who is tired of having no-one who loves them, and has begun imagining instead. Wallop. |

Don't forget the poem "A wonderful bird is the pelican His beak can hold more than his belly can." I think it's an extended metaphor about someone who has a wide circle of people that they're 'interested' in, but is pissed off when someone starts poaching said people. Like when you take away a toy that a baby isn't playing with. |
